The ninth annual Wyoming Area Scholarship Celebration was held May 24. The event was held in the high school gym for the first time due to the overflow attendance of nearly 500 people. More than $196,000 in local scholarships were awarded to 55 members of the Wyoming Area Class of 2018. This year, 11 new scholarships were added. Because of the generosity of so many in the Wyoming Area community, this award program continues to grow. Scholarships are offered by families, individuals, Wyoming Area graduating classes, civic organizations, businesses, school groups and faculty. There are memorials for community members who have died, which are funded by their families, friends or organizations to which they belonged. Each scholarship has its own selection committee that makes the final recipient selections. Wyoming Area is working on several new scholarships for next year and has received several inquiries since this year’s scholarship celebration. Among the 11 new scholarships presented this year was the James “Jamie” Oliveri Memorial Scholarship, which was presented to Cassandra Sypulski.
