The 10th annual Wyoming Area Scholarship Celebration was held May 23 in the high school gym, where it was moved two years ago due to the overflow attendance of more than 450 people. More than $200,000 in local money was awarded to 52 members of the Wyoming Area graduating class and eight Wyoming Area graduates are still receiving funds from the Ruth Boorom Melberger fund at Wilkes University, which is part of the Wyoming Area Scholarship Program. Several seniors also received awards through the Luzerne Foundation and the Monsignor Andrew J. McGowan Fund. These awards are in addition to scholarships granted to Wyoming Area seniors from colleges and universities. This year, 12 new scholarships were added and two more came in very near to the date of the celebration, making 14 new scholarships available to the students. Because of the generosity of so many people in the Wyoming Area community, this award program continues to grow. Scholarships are offered by families, individuals, Wyoming Area graduating classes, civic organizations, businesses, military groups and school groups, including a faculty scholarship. There are also memorial scholarships funded by the families, friends and organizations of several community members who have died. Each scholarship has its own selection committee which makes the final recipient selections. The Wyoming Area School District and community are very proud of this program and of the generosity and thoughtfulness of its donors.

The 12 new scholarships added at the beginning of the process this year are: Concetta and David Carey Sr. Memorial Scholarship, Exeter Proud Wyoming Area Senior Scholarship, Harry J. Giacometti Memorial Scholarship, Sgt. Donald F. Lasota Jr. Honorary Military Scholarship, Reliable Transportation Scholarship, Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 396 Wyoming Scholarship, West Pittston Ambulance Scholarship, Wyoming Area Class of 2018 Gives Back Scholarship, Wyoming Area Class of 1984 Gives Back Scholarship, Wyoming Area Lady Warriors Basketball Scholarship, Wyoming Hose Company No. 2 Scholarship and the Josette Yakobitis Memorial Scholarship. The 13th new scholarship was the HEART Award donated by the Borzell family in memory of their son, John Anthony “Beno” Borzell. On the occasion of the 10th anniversary of the Wyoming Area Scholarship program, the Borzell family awarded a special one-time HEART award. The recipient, Daniel Wiedl, was selected from the pool of applicants for the John Anthony “Beno” Borzell Scholarship, which has been part of this scholarship program since 2012.

The 14th new scholarship was donated through the Luzerne Foundation by an anonymous donor who designated it be awarded to a Wyoming Area graduating senior. An application was devised and Megan Lee was this year’s recipient, selected by the Luzerne Foundation Scholarship Advisory Committee.

Wyoming Area is working on several new scholarships for next year and has received more inquiries since the ceremony was held.

The 11th annual Wyoming Area Scholarship Celebration will be held Wednesday, May 20, in the high school gym.

Rosella Fedor and Juel Anne Klepadlo serve as chairs of this program.
