We’ve all been in the situation on Valentine’s Day. It creeps up on us and we find ourselves scrambling for a last minute gift for a loved one and panicking to get a nice dinner reservation before all the spots are taken.

For the past few years, the West Pittson Fire Department has held a fundraiser to alleviate a hefty amount of that pressure. You’ve seen the flower sale signs up around town which means that Valentine’s Day is fast approaching. And this fundraiser is a perfect way to help the fire department and get a beautiful and memorable gift for your loved one all at once.

The West Pittston Fire Department is coming to the rescue yet again this year with its annual fundraiser. They are selling two dozen roses starting at $25 and up, while supplies last. Firefighters will be in the parking lot of Driscoll’s selling roses Wednesday, Feb. 12, through Friday, Feb. 14. Go grab your roses while supplies last and help support the fire department.

Corpus Christi news

All boys and girls who are in second grade, whether enrolled in the parish’s religious education program or attending a Catholic school, are eligible to receive the Sacrament of First Reconciliation at 10 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 8, in Immaculate Conception Church. The Sacrament of First Eucharist will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Saturday, May 2, in Immaculate Conception Church. Early next week, a registration form has been sent to all boys and girls in the religious education program and to those children attending a Catholic school registered under the parish. Please fill out the registration form and return it in the mail or place it in the weekend collection.

Save the date! The next parish bingo will be held Saturday, March 28, in Immaculate Conception Hall. Stay tuned for details.

Valley Alliance Church news

Valley Alliance Church holds Sunday morning prayer service at 9:45 a.m. and worship service at 10:30 a.m. The services offer a time of contemporary music, prayer and Biblical teaching. Nursery service is available.

The church also will host an all-ages prayer and Bible study at 6:30 p.m. every Wednesday.

Library news

West Pittston Library announces the following upcoming programs:

AhMAZEing — 6:30 p.m. Tuesday Feb. 11. Up for a challenge? How about several? Test your brainpower with a variety of mazes: a gravity maze, a marble maze, marble run, a coding maze or two and classic paper mazes! Can you make it out?

Craft Night — You Can Paint at 7 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 13. If you love painting but are intimidated by the process, visit the library for a painting class that includes a complete video tutorial. Library staff will tread through the murky swamp of online classes and tutorials to find the best ones to walk you through step-by-step. Enjoy the video, finish a painting, have a snack or drink, and get your daily does of laughs. This class costs $10, which covers all materials.

Mardi Gras Celebration — 6:30 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 25. This Fat Tuesday jamboree will be filled with jazz music while kids create their own masks and beaded necklaces, decorate their own parade float, play musical king crowns, throw beads and sample some New Orleans cuisine. Learn a little bit about the history of Mardi Gras and end the night with a parade of floats! Participants are required to bring their own shoebox.

Craft Night — Pencil Storage Roll at 6 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 27. Need somewhere to store all your new tools after learning how to journal, sew and paint this season? This project is adaptable for most tools that you would like to wrap and roll to bring with you on your travels. This class cost $5 and all materials are included.

Registration is required for many library programs. Registration must be done in advance and can be done in person or by calling 570-654-9847.

The library does not take registrations through Facebook.

Cherry Blossom news

West Pittston Cherry Blossom Committee will meet at 6 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 23, at the Corpus Christi School on Luzerne Avenue. All committee members must attend.

The committee will be selling banners as a fundraiser. The cost for the first year is $150 and $50 renewal fee, which is due the beginning of April.

Information regarding the banners may be sent to treasurer Toni Valenti, 360 Damon St., West Pittston, PA 18643.

Checks must be made payable to West Pittston Cherry Blossom.

All proceeds from the banner sales go toward the festival and for the West Pittston Community.
