WA kindergarten registration slated
Janet M. Serino, Wyoming Area School District Superintendent, announces registration of students who will be attending kindergarten in the Wyoming Area School District in the 2020-21 school year will take place Friday, March 27. Registration will be held at the Wyoming Area Kindergarten Center, 50 Penn Ave, Exeter.
Children whose last name begins with A to L will register from 8:30 to 11 a.m., and those with names beginning with M to Z will register from 1 to 3 p.m.
Children must be 5 years old by Aug. 31, 2020 to enter kindergarten, inclusive and without exception. A birth certificate as evidence of age must be provided upon registration.
Proof of residence must be presented in the form of deed, signed lease agreement, or property tax bill and current utility bill to residence, check stub for wages, public assistance or Social Security.
State law requires that children attempting to enroll must have proper immunization. Immunization records must be presented. Children entering kindergarten must have the following vaccines: four doses of tetanus, (one dose on or after fourth birthday) and four doses of diphtheria, (one dose on or after fourth birthday), usually given as DTP or DT or Td; three doses of polio; two doses of measles, two doses of mumps and one dose of rubella (German Measles), usually given as MMR; three doses of hepatitis B and two doses of varicella or evidence of immunity to chickenpox.
Children registering also will receive required screenings during registration.

Military groups offer
scholarships at WA
Wyoming Area announced its 10th new scholarship for 2020. Exeter Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 6518 is joining the Wyoming Area Scholarship program by offering a military-related award.
To be eligible for this award, the student must be a Wyoming Area graduating senior who has committed to any branch of military service. In addition, any Wyoming Area graduating senior who has a parent or step-parent who has served in the military or who is still serving in the military on active duty should complete the addendum for VFW Exeter Post 6518, including the essay and proof of service. If interested in applying for this scholarship, visit the Wyoming Area Scholarship website for specific details. To be considered for this award students must submit the addendum, essay and proof of military service to Teddi Rabel by April 3.
Other military groups offering military awards to Wyoming Area graduating seniors are the Exeter, West Pittston, West Wyoming American Legions and the Wyoming VFW. To qualify for these awards, the Wyoming Area graduating senior must present official commitment papers and the completed addendum for these awards, which can be found on the Wyoming Area Scholarship website, and submit them to Rabel by April 3.
Many of these groups have been offering these awards for the past several years. The number of awards and amount for each award is determined by the individual military groups.
These awards are exclusively for Wyoming Area graduating seniors. Only those seniors attending Wyoming Area High School may apply for any scholarships on the Wyoming Area Scholarship website.
Seniors and their parents are encouraged to go on the Wyoming Area Scholarship website to find specific information about all of the awards presented for this program.
Deadline for military awards is Friday, April 3. There will be no extension to this deadline.
Through the Luzerne Foundation, Wyoming Area graduating seniors are also eligible to apply for a scholarship in memory of 1st Lt Jeffrey DePrimo. Rabel has that application and information about this scholarship. Wyoming Area seniors have been awarded this scholarship in the past.

Lt. Jeffrey DePrimo
The 1st Lt. Jeffrey DePrimo Scholarship is now being offered to any Greater Pittston student wishing to apply. Application forms are available at the Luzerne Foundation website, Pittston Area High School, Wyoming Area High School and Holy Redeemer. Those students who are applying are reminded to be sure to read all the requirements before submitting an application.
PA plans kindergarten
Kevin Booth, superintendent of the Pittston Area School District, announced registration of students who plan on attending kindergarten in the Pittston Area School District for the 2020-21 school year will be held through March 18.
All students entering kindergarten must be 5 years old by Aug. 31, 2020.
Parents may register in two ways, by accessing the online registration site at www.pittstonarea.com and completing all required information by Wednesday, March 18, which is the preferred method, or by returning a completed registration packet and copies of required documentation to the Administrative Office, 5 Stout St., Yatesville, by Wednesday, March 18. Registration packets can be picked up at the administrative office, if necessary.
New this year, screening appointments will be held March 23-24. When all registration paperwork is finalized, parents will be able to sign up for a screening appointment slot on Monday, March 23, or Tuesday, March 24. Screening appointments will be available every 15 minutes between 9 and 11:45 a.m. and 1 and 2:45 p.m. at the Pittston Area Primary Center, Rock Street, Hughestown. Scheduling will be coordinated at the central registration office.
A parent or guardian must bring the student to the primary center for their scheduled screening appointment in March. Each child will receive hearing and vision screenings. Children also will receive a Reading Readiness Assessment, which is an assessment of pre-reading skills, consisting of two parts: identifying letters of the alphabet and phonemic awareness assessment. In addition, all students will be photographed and immunization history will be reviewed by the school nurse. All students registering must adhere to the school vaccination requirements set forth by the Pennsylvania Department of Education.

Misericordia will host
Verve Vertu art exhibit
Misericordia University’s departments of occupational therapy and philosophy and occupational therapy students in the community-based group, Bee the Change committee, are collaborating with Verve Vertu Art Studio to present the exhibition, “# Create,” beginning Monday, March 9, in the lobby of the Banks Student Life Center in recognition of National Developmental Disabilities Awareness Month. The exhibition, which runs through March 13, features artwork from Verve Vertu artists. A special celebratory art show and reception will be held from 5 to 8 p.m. Thursday, March 12, in the lobby of the Banks center. The event also features a variety of music by the Verve Vertunes, a group of performing artists from the studio under the direction of Barbara Roberts.
More than 30 Verve Vertu artists will have their original works on display, including the following Greater Pittston artists: Monique Dennis, Exeter; Mary Joe Evans, Wyoming; Sherry Pudim, Exeter; Desiree Reed, Wyoming, and Marie Ross, West Wyoming.
The Verve Vertu Art Studio is a community-based program for the Deutsch Institute, which provides recreational and leisurely activities to people with diverse abilities.
