Wyoming Area

Scholarship Program applications due soon

Applications for the Wyoming Area Scholarship Program are due by Wednesday, Feb. 5.

Scholarship program organizers announce the addition of two recently added scholarships to the program, making a total of nine new scholarships added this year.

The two new scholarships are the John Glatz Memorial Scholarship, established in John’s memory by his nieces, Gwen and Ellie. It will be awarded to the Wyoming Area graduating senior who is a West Pittston resident with the highest weighted cumulative average in science, having also successfully completed a science course in Grade 12.

The second new scholarship also added recently is the Richard B. Anselmi Memorial Scholarship. It is an add-on award to the Exeter Lions/John B. Campbell Memorial Scholarship. Any Wyoming Area graduating senior who applies for the Exeter Lions Scholarship will be automatically considered for this new scholarship.

The Exeter Lions selection committee will make the final selection. One recipient will be selected and awarded the Exeter Lions/John B. Campbell Memorial Scholarship of $1,000 plus the Richard B. Anselmi Memorial Scholarship of $1,000, totalling $2,000 for the scholarships, combined.

Any Wyoming Area graduating senior interested in applying for any of the scholarship awards offered through this program should go online to the Wyoming Area website for specific requirements and detailed instructions for each award granted through this program.

The deadline for submitting applications for all the scholarships which are part of this program is Wednesday Feb. 5. No extensions will be given to this date, which has been in place for some time.

Donors control all aspects of their awards.

Rosella Fedor and Juel Anne Klepadlo serve as chairwomen for this program, which will celebrate its 11th year on May 20, when the annual scholarship celebration will be held in the high school gym.

PA sets kindergarten

registration and

student screenings

Kevin Booth, superintendent of the Pittston Area School District, announced registration of students who plan on attending kindergarten in the Pittston Area School District for the 2020-21 school year will be held through March 18. All students entering kindergarten must be 5 years old by Aug. 31, 2020.

Parents may register in two ways, by accessing the online registration site at www.pittstonarea.com and completing all required information by Wednesday, March 18, which is the preferred method, or by returning a completed registration packet and copies of required documentation to the Administrative Office, 5 Stout St., Yatesville, by Wednesday, March 18. Registration packets can be picked up at the administrative office, if necessary.

New this year, screening appointments will be held March 23-24. When all registration paperwork is finalized, parents will be able to sign up for a screening appointment slot on Monday, March 23, or Tuesday, March 24. Screening appointments will be available every 15 minutes from 9 to 11:45 a.m. and from 1 to 2:45 p.m. at the Pittston Area Primary Center, Rock Street, Hughestown. Scheduling will be coordinated at the central registration office.

A parent or guardian must bring the student to the primary center for their scheduled screening appointment in March. Each child will receive hearing and vision screenings. Children also will receive a Reading Readiness Assessment, which is an assessment of pre-reading skills, consisting of two parts: identifying letters of the alphabet and phonemic awareness assessment. In addition, all students will be photographed and immunization history will be reviewed by the school nurse. All students registering must adhere to the school vaccination requirements set forth by the Pennsylvania Department of Education.

For information, call the district’s central registration office at 570-654-2415, ext 2108.
