Kevin Booth, superintendent of the Pittston Area School District, announced registration of students who plan on attending kindergarten in the district for the 2017-18 school year will be held from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 16, at the Pittston Area Primary Center, Rock Street, Hughestown. All students must be 5 years old by Aug. 31. Parents may register either online at and complete all required information by Tuesday, Aug. 15, which is the preferred method; or return a completed registration packet and copies of required documentation to the administrative office, 5 Stout St., Pittston, by Aug. 15. Registration packets can also be picked up at the administrative office, if necessary. Screening also will take place from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 16, at the Pittston Area Primary Center. A parent or guardian must bring the student to the Primary Center during the screening Aug. 16. Each child will receive hearing and vision screening. Children will also receive a Reading Readiness Assessment, which is an assessment of pre-reading skills, consisting of two parts: identifying letters of the alphabet and phonemic awareness assessment. Lastly, immunization history will be reviewed. The following immunizations are required: four doses of diphtheria and tetanus vaccine (one dose administered on or after the fourth birthday); three doses of polio vaccine; three doses of hepatitis B vaccine; two doses of measles, mumps and rubella (MMR); two doses varicella vaccine (chicken pox) or proof of disease.
