John Baloga and Sam DeAlba place a wreath on the Knox Mine Disaster Monument in Jenkins Twp. Baloga is the grandson of miner John Baloga and is one of the owners of the funeral home where the monument stands.

A memorial service was held Sunday, Jan. 21, to remember the victims of the Knox Mine Disaster. Twelve miners were killed Jan. 22, 1959, when icy water from the Susquehanna River broke through the roof of the mine they were working in. The annual commemoration was held as part of Anthracite Mining Heritage Month, held each year in January.
