The annual Knox Mine Disaster commemoration ceremony was held Jan. 19 at the Pennsylvania Historical and Museum Commission Marker in front of Baloga Funeral Home in Pittston. A walk to the actual site followed. A Memorial Mass also was held at St. John the Evangelist Church, Pittston, in honor of the 12 miners killed when on Jan. 22, 1959, the Susquehanna River broke through the roof of the mine where they were working.
