Now that the Tomato Festival has come to an end, the summer season is going along with it and that means back to school! I hope all of the local students have a fantastic school year.

I would also like to wish the Pittston Area football team good luck in its season. Always remember when you play the game it doesn’t matter if you win or lose as long as you’re giving it your all!

Jenkins Twp. road


Jenkins Twp. has scheduled a rededication ceremony of Tedrick Street at 10 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 31. The ceremony will take place at Chestnut and Tedrick streets. The street will be renamed Gaffney Drive, in honor of, William Gaffney, who has dedicated a major portion of his life to the betterment of Jenkins Twp. The ceremony is open to everyone. The general public is invited and of course all of William Gaffney’s family and friends will be on hand. For information, please contact the municipal building at 570-654-3315.

Labor Day closures

The Jenkins Twp. Municipal Building, 46 ½ Main St., Inkerman, and the Pittston Twp. Municipal Building, 421 Broad St., in Pittston Twp., will both be closed Monday, Sept. 2, due to the Labor Day holiday.

Public Safety Day

The Jenkins Twp. Police Department, Jenkins Twp. Fire Department and Jenkins Twp. Crime Watch, along with Pittston Regional Ambulance, are hosting a Public Safety Day. Admission is free to anyone who wishes to attend, and the event is scheduled from 10 a.m. to noon Saturday, Sept. 14, at the Jenkins Twp. Hose Company, 2 Second St.

During Public Safety Day, children can get fingerprinted and get an identification card, and attendees can get up close and personal with emergency vehicles, including the fire truck and ambulance, and take a seat in the police cruiser.

Jenkins Twp. and Pittston City emergency services providers will be on hand to meet with the public and answer any questions. A child safety car seat check will be demonstrated, Pittston City’s Smokehouse will be there and there will be a live line demonstration showing how firefighters spray the fire hose. Refreshments will be available.

Jenkins Lions ham dinner

It’s that time of year again for the Jenkins Twp. Lions Club’s annual ham dinner. The event is scheduled from noon to 4 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 22, at the Jenkins Twp. Hose Co., 2 Second St., in Pittston.

The cost per ticket is $10 for adults and $5 for children. The meal will consist of ham with pineapple, scalloped potatoes, green beans, applesauce and coleslaw. There also will be cake, coffee, soda and water. Tickets can be purchased from any member of the Lions Club or by calling Stan Rovinski at 570-905-8627 or Virginia Linskey at 570-655-3538.

PTAA Smile fundraiser

Pittston Twp. Ambulance Association is hosting a fundraiser that is sure to put a smile on everyone’s face. The PTAA is hosting a fundraiser through the AmazonSmile Foundation website. is a website operated by Amazon that lets customers enjoy the same selection of products as, the only difference is that when you shop at, the AmazonSmile Foundation donates a small percentage of your purchase price on eligible items to a charitable organization such as the PTAA.

To participate, go to, log in with your Amazon username and password, in the search bar type in Pittston Twp. Ambulance Association, the name will appear and the year it started, 1977. Once you’ve selected it, the website will redirect you to where you go about your normal shopping.

Jenkins zoning information

Jenkins Twp. Zoning Officer JoElle Dougherty reminds residents that work being done on your property, such as house additions, decks, pools, sidewalks and driveways, may require permits. Building permits are required for these as well as roof, window, plumbing and electrical work.

Notice also is given to all businesses in the township that signs cannot be placed on poles or in the ground anywhere in Jenkins Twp. Doing so is considered a violation and is subject to fines.

Pittston Twp. yard waste

and bulk collections

Residents are reminded to pick up their 2019 refuse permit at the Pittston Twp. Municipal Building, 421 Broad St., daily from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. If residents do not purchase a permit, the refuse or recycling will not be collected.

Yard waste will be picked up the first and third Tuesday of the month in the areas of Browntown, Cork Lane, Tedrick and Market streets, west of the bypass, Stauffer Heights, Center Street, Laurel Street, Doly Street, Mill Street, Horizon Estates and Stauffer Pointe. The second and fourth Tuesday of the month, yard waste will be picked up in the areas of Butler Heights and Route 315, Suscon Road, Pocono Ridge Estates, Houston City, Glendale, Route 502 and Quail Hill.

Yard waste must be in open containers or paper bags. The following items cannot be picked up: rocks, concrete, stone, tree stumps, lumber, plastics, plastic bags and ashes. To schedule a collection, contact the municipal building at 570-654-0161 between 8 a.m. and 4 p.m. the day before.

Pittston Twp. residents are reminded bulk item collection is limited to 12 items per year with a yellow sticker. Bulk item pickup is allowed one per month per residence.

Jenkins Twp. yard waste

Jenkins Twp.’s red yard waste containers are available for sale for $11 each at the municipal building, 46½ Main St., Inkerman.

Yard waste will be picked up every Thursday. Residents are reminded to put yard waste in the appropriate containers. Containers must have perforations on the bottom, handles on each side and cannot have a lid on top. They may not have rims on the top, wheels on the bottom or exceed 20 gallons.

The filled yard waste containers cannot weigh more than 30 pounds. If there are branches in the container, they must not be more than 3 feet long, and they must be bundled and tied together for a manageable pickup.

Notice is being given to any resident caught dumping yard waste in any vacant lot or any municipal property that this is a violation and you will be subject to fines.

Recent infestations of bed bugs have spread from mattresses to employees as they make curbside pickups. Therefore, mattresses and box springs must be bagged and sealed in plastic mattress bags when placed curbside.

Items may be set out on your regularly scheduled trash/bulk service day.

Jenkins trash fee

Jenkins Twp. reminds residents payment of the 2019 refuse and recycling sticker is past due. The names of anyone with unpaid balances will be sent to the police department for enforcement.

Anyone who wishes to upgrade their service to the next size may do so by bringing proof of the current sticker for the bin size and a copy of the paid invoice to the Jenkins Twp. Municipal Office, 46½ Main St., in Inkerman.

Bulk stickers also are available for purchase. Residents must purchase a full sheet of six stickers for $30. Major credit cards are accepted.

Residents are advised they no longer have to schedule a pickup with County Waste for bulk items. Just place items out Monday evening or by approximately 6 a.m. Tuesday for bulk items to be picked up. Tires, building materials, automobile parts and electronics are not accepted. Mattresses and box springs must be wrapped in plastic.

Jenkins Twp. lists the following upcoming meetings:

Jenkins Twp. Board of Supervisors will meet at 7 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 11. The board of supervisors normally meets the second Wednesday of every month.

Jenkins Twp. Planning Commission will meet at 7 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 19. The planning commission normally meets the third Thursday of every month.

Jenkins Crime Watch

Jenkins Twp. Crime Watch will meet at 7 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 4, at the Jenkins Twp. Municipal Building, 46½ Main St. in Inkerman.

The Jenkins Twp. Crime Watch’s meeting schedule has changed and the monthly meetings are now held the first Wednesday of every month.

Jenkins seniors

The Jenkins Twp. Senior Citizen Organization’s next meeting is scheduled for 6:30 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 17, at the Jenkins Twp. Hose Company, 2 Second St., Pittston.

The group normally meets the third Tuesday of every month.
