As part of the continued centennial celebrations, the Dupont Youth Baseball Organization and Holy Mother of Sorrows will sponsor free movie nights Saturdays, Aug. 19 and Aug. 26, beginning at 8 p.m. at the Little League Field on Elm Street. Featured presentation Aug. 19 is “The Sandlot” and the Aug. 26 feature is “Jumanji.”

There will be popcorn, drinks and water. Outside food and drinks are allowed. No alcohol is allowed on premises. Bring your own chairs and blankets.

Softball tournament results

Congratulation to Liberty Tax Service, winners of this year’s Dupont Softball Tournament. This is the team’s first championship in 11 appearances. Tournament runner-up was Pittston Fuel.

 In the Dupont Rivalry Game, The Big D vs. Dupont Coalcrackers, The Big D won, the team’s first victory since 2008.

 Geoff Baumes kept his champion title by winning his fifth straight hot dog eating contest.

 The inaugural Dupont Softball Tournament Hall of Fame Induction took place Saturday afternoon. Dan Matechak, Jeff Bartush and Kenny “The Hawk” Klimek were the inaugural inductees and a plaque has been placed in the concession stand at the Little League Field

Organizations that received donations from proceeds of the tournament were: Dupont Youth Baseball, Dupont Lions, Dupont Hose Company, Dupont Children’s Fund, Dupont VFW Post 4909, AMVETS, Polish American Citizens Club, Baylin’s Buddies, Excelsior Hose Company, YMCA and Autism Speaks.


Centennial news

The Centennial Parade and Picnic will be held Saturday, Aug. 26, and Sunday, Aug. 27. Parade will be held at noon Saturday, followed by the picnic from 2 to 9 p.m. Sunday, the picnic will continue from 2 to 9 p.m., followed by fireworks. Some of the events planned at the picnic are cow pie bingo, horse driven carriage rides, circus entertainment from Eclectic Circus, Balloons by Justincredible, a concession stand at the park run by Chef Scott Barnes of Chef’s Corner, food trucks, Manning’s ice cream, movies, and much more to follow.

There is still time to sign up for the 5K. Register online at and join the Facebook event for more details. Entrance forms and route map for the run/walk for the 5K are also available at the Dupont Municipal Office.

Elko’s registration

Elko’s Lanes will hold registration for the 2017 season from noon to 3 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 12, and Sunday, Aug. 13, at Dupont Lanes on Main Street. Registration fee is $17.

Elko’s Jr. Bowlers will begin Saturday, Sept. 2, and the Jr./ Sr. Mixed will begin Friday, Sept. 1. For information, please call 570-655-6241.

VFW meetings

Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 4909 will hold its next meeting at 7:30 p.m. Monday, Aug. 7, at the post home.

The Home Association meeting will follow. Food and refreshments will be served after both meetings.

Hose company drive

Dupont Volunteer Hose Company No. 1’s annual fund drive is underway. Letters have been sent to Dupont residents asking for support. The department relies primarily upon donations from residents and businesses in the community in order to provide the best possible level of fire protection in the community.

Beyond the community’s financial support, the most valuable asset has always been the dedicated members who serve the department. If you are interested in becoming a part of the Dupont Volunteer Hose Company, please feel free to stop by the station or call 570654-5121 or 570-654-4222 for more information.

Taxes mailed

Dupont Borough Tax Collector Joy Tetlak-Adelstein notifies residents the 2017 school real estate tax bills were issued July 24. During the discount period, residents may pay their taxes from 9 to 11 a.m. Tuesdays and Thursdays at the municipal building, 600 Chestnut St. 

Last day to pay taxes at the discount amount is Tuesday, Sept. 26. The office will be open additional hours Sept. 11 and Sept. 18, from 4 to 7 p.m. 

The office will be closed through Aug. 6. 

Residents who are unable to pay their taxes at the municipal building can mail payment to Joy Tetlak-Adelstein, Tax Collector, Dupont Municipal Building, 600 Chestnut St., Dupont, PA  18641.

To obtain a receipt, please include a self addressed, stamped envelope and the entire bill with your payment.  The taxpayer copy of the bill will be returned to you. If you do not wish to obtain a receipt, please include the tax collector copy of the bill with your payment.

Holy Mother of Sorrows news

Holy Mother of Sorrows will hold its annual giant outdoor flea market from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 9, on the parish grounds on Wyoming Avenue. Outside vendors, as well as parishioners, are welcome to participate. Cost is $10 per table.

 The parish will hold its 41st Dozynki Festival from 10 a.m. to dusk Sunday, Sept. 10. Blessing of Harvest Wreath Ceremony is at 2 p.m. with live  music by Joe Lastovica and The Polka Punch from 3 to 6 p.m.. There will be a variety of homemade ethnic foods, such as pierogi, potato pancakes, golabki, kluski, kielbasa, sausage, soups, funnel cakes, etc., as well as American foods like hot dogs and hamburgers. Homemade baked goods also will be available. The event also will include a 50/50 raffle, bingo, raffle and Chinese auction.

DePrimo golf benefit

The 1st Lt. Jeffrey DePrimo Memorial Fund of the Luzerne Foundation will host the ninth annual 1st Lt. Jeffrey DePrimo Memorial Golf Tournament on Saturday, Aug. 12, at the Wilkes Barre Golf Club. Registration is at 7 a.m. with a captain and crew format. Tee off is at 8 a.m.

Cost is $75 per golfer. This includes a riding cart and 18 holes of golf, followed by dinner and awards. Early registration is available and encouraged to ensure a proper shirt size.
