With the start of a new school year just around the corner, the Duryea Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 1227 are giving kids one last shot of summer fun at Healey Playground this weekend.
Be sure to stop by for Movie in the Park,where guests will be treated to a showing of “Incredibles 2” at dusk on Saturday, Aug. 24, at the playground, 398 Foote Ave. Free refreshments will be served.
Community yard sale
Duryea Betterment Committee will sponsor the town-wide Duryea Community Yard Sale from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 24.
Sales will take place at more than 50 homes in town as well as at St. Mary’s Polish National Catholic Church, 200 Stephenson St. The sales will take place on the following avenues and streets: Adams, Center, Cherry, Chittenden, Church, Columbia, Constitution, Cranberry, Donnelly, Edwards, Elm, Evans, Foote, Getty, Grove, Hooven, Hope, Lackawanna, Main, Marcy, McAlpine, Mitchell, New, Newton, Pettebone, Pride, Railroad, Raspberry, Short, Stephenson, Watt and Wright.

Duryea Street Department collection schedule for the week of Aug. 25 is as follows: garbage, Monday, Aug. 26 and Tuesday, Aug. 27, and yard waste, Friday, Aug. 30. There is no recycling collection this week.
Duryea American Legion, Sons of the American Legion and American Legion Auxiliary officials will have swearing-in ceremonies at 5 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 25, at the Brennan Regan Post 585, 329 Main St. All officers that were elected must attend and wear their uniforms.
Nativity of Our Lord Parish will host a takeout beef and pork barbecue dinner from 4 to 6 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 4, in Sacred Heart Hall, 529 Stephenson St.
The menu will feature a choice of two sandwiches, a bag of chips and a piece of homemade cake.
Orders are $10 each and can be placed by calling the rectory at 570-457-3502 during business hours. Please note, all orders must be placed by Friday, Aug. 30.
Nativity religious education
Nativity of Our Lord Parish’s religious education classes will resume Sunday, Sept. 8. Classes will take place from 9:45 to 10:45 a.m. for kindergarten through seventh grade and from 5:15 to 6:45 p.m. for eighth grade.
Registration will take place from 9:45 to 10:45 a.m. Sunday, Aug. 25, at Holy Rosary School, 125 Stephenson St.
Parish families have been mailed registration forms. The forms should be completed or updated and returned with the registration fee at the registration event.
VFW Craft Beer and Classic Rock Festival
Duryea Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 1227, Excelsior Hose Company No. 2, Rock 107, Rock 107’s Hoover and NEPA’s ESPN Radio will host a Craft Beer and Classic Rock Festival on Saturday, Sept. 7, at the post home, 492 Stephenson St. The event sponsor is Krugel’s Georgetown Deli & Beer, Wilkes-Barre.
The doors open at 2 p.m. with unlimited sampling from 3 to 6 p.m. from more than 30 breweries. Big King Moose will play all of your classic rock favorites live.
Tickets are $35 per person. VIP tickets are $50 and include early sampling at 2 p.m. and access to five beers not available to general admission guests. Designated driver tickets are $10 and include soda and water.
Tickets are on sale at: Duryea VFW 1227; Krugel’s Georgetown Deli & Beer, Wilkes-Barre; Smokey Bones Bar & Fire Grill, Wilkes-Barre Twp.; Clause Beverage, Carbondale, and Slaters Café, Scranton. Tickets also are available from any member of the Excelsior Hose Co. No. 2 or online at rock107.com. Please note, tickets purchased online have an additional service fee. Tickets are limited and will not be sold at the door.

SAL meatball hoagie sale
Sons of the American Legion, Squadron 585, will have a meatball hoagie sale from noon to 6 p.m., or until sold out, Sunday, Sept. 8, at the Brennan Regan post home, 329 Main St. The hoagies will be served on 8-inch National Bakery hoagie rolls with or without cheese. The cost is $7. Guests can add fresh cut fries for $1.
Little League recognition
Luzerne County Council will honor Greater Pittston Area Little League 8/9/10 and 10/11/12 All-Star teams, as well as the Pittston Area Junior Softball team for their accomplishments this year. The event will take place at 5 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 10, at the Luzerne County Courthouse.
VFW pitch league
Duryea Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 1227 will have a pitch league at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 10, through Tuesday, Nov. 12, at the post home, 492 Stephenson St. Bring a partner and join in the fun.
Duryea Borough Council will meet Tuesday, Sept. 10, at the municipal building, 315 Main St. The public work session is at 6:30 p.m. and the meeting is at 7.
VFW outdoor concert
Duryea Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 1227 and Duryea American Legion Brennan Regan Post 585 will host a free summer concert featuring The Sperazza Band from 6 to 10 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 14, at the VFW post home, 492 Stephenson St.
The American Legion’s finest cooks will be sizzling and selling all of your favorite foods, too!
Bring your blankets, chairs and your kiddos to enjoy a great evening outside under the stars.
Germania Wine Fest
Germania Hose Company will host its third annual wine fest from 1 to 6 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 28, on the hose company grounds, 430 Foote Ave.
The public is invited to stop by to sample local wineries and craft beers, homemade foods and shop at the craft vendor stands while listening to live entertainment by The Sperazza Band.Axe Kickers NEPA also will be on hand.

Al-Anon meets at 7 p.m. Thursdays at Brick United Methodist Church, 935 Foote Ave. This is an anonymous 12-step program of recovery for families and friends of addicts and alcoholics.
Duryea High School, Class of 1958, reunion
Duryea High School, Class of 1958, will celebrate its 61st reunion the first weekend in October. The festivities begin at 6 p.m. Friday, Oct. 4, with a meet and greet at Arturo’s Restaurant & Bar, 140 Main St., Dupont. The following day, the class will gather at 4 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 5, at Nativity of Our Lord Parish at Holy Rosary Church, 127 Stephenson St., for Mass to honor their departed class members. After Mass, the classmates will gather at Arcaro & Genell’s restaurant, 443 S. Main St., Old Forge, for dinner.
