Happy Thanksgiving, everyone! I hope you have a delicious dinner today and are surrounded by the people who bring blessings to your life.

While the official Christmas holiday shopping season kicks off tomorrow, the Duryea Betterment Committee has already caught the Christmas spirit and are planning the fourth annual Christmas Stroll down Main Street.

The stroll will take place from 5 to 8 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 8, on Main Street. Details about the stroll itself will be available soon, but information for vendors is available now.

Vendor space will be available throughout the Duryea Municipal Building, Phoenix Theatre and the Brennan Regan American Legion Post 585 on a first come, first served basis. Vendor space is $10 and a donation of a raffle basket. Please note, spots cannot be guaranteed without payment. Also, vendors are responsible for setting up and tearing down their sales area.

During the 25th general synod of the Polish National Catholic Church, held in Belleville, Illinois, the Most Rev. Anthony A. Mikovsky was re-elected prime bishop of the Polish National Catholic Church.

St. Mary’s is the Polish National Catholic Church in Duryea.

Leaf and yard waste


Duryea Street Department is utilizing a leaf truck vacuum to collect leaves. Residents with large amounts of leaves should rake and pile their leaves curbside to be vacuumed. Leaves will not be collected if they are in bins or bags. Leaf collections will continue into the second week of December, weather permitting.

The final yard waste collection for the season will be Friday, Nov. 23.

Residents also can call 570-655-1299 to request a leaf collection.

VFW dart league

Duryea Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 1227’s dart league will begin Thursday, Nov. 29, at the post home, 492 Stephenson St. Rules and the sign-up sheet are available at the post.

Tax reminder

Duryea Tax Collector Martin Hanczyc states school taxes are now at face value. Taxes can be paid from 5 to 7 p.m. Tuesdays at 79 Main St., or by appointment.

When mailing in tax bills and requesting a receipt, please send in the entire tax bill and a self-addressed, stamped envelope. Also, please include your phone number on the back of the bill. And, if you are making copies of your taxes, mail in the original copy.

Nativity of Our Lord

men’s breakfast

Nativity of Our Lord Parish’s men’s society will host its third annual Christmas breakfast from 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 9, at Sacred Heart Hall, 529 Stephenson St.

The breakfast menu includes scrambled eggs, ham, fresh and smoked kielbasa, hash browns, pancakes, Danish, pastries, coffee, milk and juice. There also will be a visit from Santa and a Christmas Pennsylvania instant lottery ticket raffle.

Tickets are $9 for adults, $5 for children ages 5 to 12 and free for children 4 and under. Tickets can be purchased at the door. Takeouts will be available, too. Delivery will be available. Call the rectory at 570-457-3502 to place your order.

Holiday schedule

The borough office will be closed Thursday, Nov. 22, and Friday, Nov. 23, for Thanksgiving. Yard waste will be picked up Friday, Nov. 23. The office and street department will reopen Monday, Nov. 26.

Council meeting

Duryea Borough Council will meet Tuesday, Dec. 11, at the municipal building, 315 Main St. The public work session is at 6:30 p.m. and the meeting is at 7.

Crime Watch meeting

Duryea Crime Watch will meet at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 12, at the municipal building, 315 Main St.

PA, Class of 1967, events

Pittston Area, Class of 1967, will have a Christmas party at 6:30 p.m. Friday, Dec. 14, at the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 4909, 401 Main St., Dupont. For information, please call Karen Hadley Sobeski at 570-457-3247.

Also, the class is planning a 70th birthday party for members of the graduating class. The party will tentatively take place sometime in September 2019. More information will be available in the future.

SAL beer raffle

Sons of the American Legion Squadron 585 is sponsoring its annual great beer raffle.

Tickets, which are $3 each, can be purchased from any member or at the Brennan Regan American Legion Post 585, 329 Main St.

The prizes include: first prize, $500 Laflin Beverage gift card; second prize, $200 Wine & Spirits Shop gift card; third prize, $50 Komensky’s Market gift card; fourth prize, $50 Town Tavern gift card, and fifth prize, $50 Family Prescription Counter.

The drawing is at 9 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 15.

SMART Recovery

SMART Recovery’s support group will meet from 5:45 to 7 p.m. weekly at Nativity of Our Lord Parish Hall, (formerly Sacred Heart Hall), 529 Stephenson St.

SMART Recovery’s 4-Point Program helps people recover from all types of substance use disorders or any unwanted behaviors. These include alcohol/drugs, prescription drugs, nicotine, co-dependency, compulsive overeating or any behavior change.

Al-Anon meetings

Al-Anon meets at 7 p.m. Thursdays at the Brick United Methodist Church, 935 Foote Ave. This is an anonymous 12-step program of recovery for families and friends of addicts and alcoholics. There are no dues or fees. Meetings last approximately one hour. The public is invited.
