Lent has arrived and so has one of Duryea’s best food sales of the year! Nativity of Our Lord Parish has several Lenten food sale dates coming up you will certainly want to mark on your calendar.

The parish will have Lenten food sales from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. (or until sold out) Fridays, March 15 and 29 and April 12, at Sacred Heart of Jesus Hall, 529 Stephenson St. The March 15 and April 12 sales will feature homemade Manhattan (red) clam chowder, seafood bisque soup, homemade haluski, prepared or frozen pierogi, pizza and a bake sale. The March 29 sale will feature potato pancakes, homemade frozen pierogi, baked and unbaked pizza and a bake sale.

Nativity of Our Lord news

Nativity of Our Lord Parish will host evening prayer at 5 p.m. Sunday, March 10, in the church, 127 Stephenson St. Each Monday during Lent, the Sacrament of Reconciliation will be available from 5:30 to 7 p.m. at the church. Eucharistic Adoration will take place from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. and conclude with Benediction at 6:30 p.m. every Monday.

The parish will host the Pittston Deanery’s Road to Resurrection Lenten service at 7 p.m. Wednesday, March 13. The parish will host Stations of the Cross st 1 p.m. Fridays with Holy Rosary School students and at 7 p.m.

 

St. Mary’s Lenten devotions

St. Mary’s Polish National Catholic Church will host Lenten devotions at 7 p.m. Fridays during Lent at the church, 200 Stephenson St.

 

Four-Boro Ministerium news

The Four-Boro Ministerium of Avoca, Duryea, Moosic and Old Forge will have their weekly ecumenical Lenten service at 7 p.m. Tuesday, March 12, in Bethel United Methodist Church, 532 Main St., Avoca. The Rev. Roger Griffin will be the guest preacher. A social hour will follow. A collection will be taken to support the food pantry at the Moosic United Methodist Church.

If local schools are closed due to inclement weather on the date of the ecumenical service, it will be cancelled that evening.

 

Germania Hose Co. news

Germania Hose Company is participating in WNEP TV-16’s 2019 Operation Save A Life smoke alarm distribution program. The department has a limited amount of alarms available for Duryea residents on a first-come, first-served basis. To obtain one, stop by the department, 430 Foote Ave., after 7 p.m. Thursdays or schedule a pickup time by sending a message to the Germania Hose Company, Duryea, Pa Facebook page.

Germania Hose Company will host a community Easter Egg Hunt from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, April 20, at the hose company. Registration begins at 9:30 a.m. Children ages 12 and under are welcome to attend.

Crystal Skies at the VFW

Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 1227 will host Crystal Skies from 7:30 to 11 p.m. Friday, March 22, at the post home, 492 Stephenson St. The kitchen will be open. Stop by to enjoy an evening of live entertainment and support our veterans.

 

Excelsior Bunny Breakfast

Excelsior Hose Company No. 2 will host a Bunny Breakfast on Saturday, April 13, at Sacred Heart of Jesus Church Hall, 127 Stephenson St. Seatings are at 9 and 11 a.m. Tickets are $10 for adults and $5 for children. Children under two will be admitted for free.

Tickets can be purchased from 7 to 9 p.m. Thursdays and 9 to 11 a.m. Saturdays at the hose company, 798 Foote Ave., or from any member. Tickets are limited.

 

Excelsior Night at the Races

Excelsior Hose Company No. 2 will host its annual Night at the Races on Saturday, March 30, at the Germania Hose Company, 430 Foote Ave. Doors open at 5:30 p.m. and the races begin at 7 p.m. There will be plenty of food, refreshments and raffles. The cost of a horse is $10. Admission is $3. Each attendee must purchase a minimum of one horse. You do not have to be present to win. Willy Wonka at Phoenix

Phoenix Kids will present, “Willy Wonka — Charlie and the Chocolate Factory,” at 7 p.m. Saturdays, March 2 and 9, and Friday, March 8, and at 2 p.m. Sundays, March 3 and 10, at the Phoenix Performing Arts Center, 409 Main St. Tickets, which are $10 for adults and $5 for children 5 and younger, can be purchased at the door or by calling the box office at 570-457-3589 to make a reservation. Handicap seating and children’s booster seats are available.

 

Tax office hours

Duryea Borough Tax Collector Martin Hanczyc announces the Luzerne County/Duryea Borough tax bills can be paid from 1 to 3 p.m. and 5 to 7 p.m. Tuesdays at the Duryea Municipal Building, 315 Main St.

If you did not receive your tax bill, please call 570-457-2482. Bills are sent directly to taxpayers by the county.

 

Council meeting

Duryea Borough Council will meet at 7 p.m. Tuesday, March 12, at the municipal building, 315 Main St. The public work session is at 6:30 p.m.

 

Events scheduling

Organization leaders are reminded to contact the mayor’s office with the date and time of any events your group is hosting to avoid double bookings.

SMART Recovery

SMART Recovery will meet from 5:45 to 7 p.m. weekly on Mondays at Nativity of Our Lord Parish Hall, 529 Stephenson St. SMART Recovery’s 4-point Program, based on CBT, supports anyone seeking change.

 

Al-Anon meetings

Al-Anon meets at 7 p.m. Thursdays at Brick United Methodist Church, 935 Foote Ave. This is an anonymous 12-step program of recovery for families and friends of addicts and alcoholics.
