Dupont Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 4909 Home Association will hold its annual St. Patrick’s Day dinner dance Saturday, March 17, at the post home.

Millennuim will provide the music for your dancing and listening pleasure from 9 p.m. to 1 a.m. A dinner buffet will be available from 7:30 to 8:45 p.m. with the bar open from 7:30 p.m. to 12:30 a.m. Door prizes will be awarded throughout the evening.

Donation is $30 per person. Contact Bob Lopata or call the VFW at 570-654-9104 for tickets. Deadline for reservations is Friday, March 16.

VFW meeting

Dupont VFW Post 4909 will hold its next meeting at 7:30 p.m. Monday, April 9, at the post home. Many items of importance will be discussed and reports given. Commander Mark Roney will preside.

The Home Association meeting will follow.

Food and refreshments will be served after both meetings.

Youth baseball T-ball

registration, fish fry

Dupont Youth Baseball Organization will conduct 2018 T-ball sign-ups from noon to 2 p.m. Saturday, March 10, at the Dupont Municipal Building.

Registration fees are still just $25 per player with no additional fundraisers or sales necessary. Children 3 to 7 years old are eligible and there are no town jurisdictions so children from the surrounding area are welcome to play in Dupont.

The Dupont Youth Baseball Organization also will sponsor a fish fry Friday, March 23, at the Dupont Little League concession stand. The dinner will be takeout only from 4 to 7 p.m. Menu includes hand battered haddock, french fries, cole slaw and roll.

Cost per ticket is $10. Tickets can be purchased by contacting Rob at 570-540-0772 or Mark at 570-709-0814.

Holy Mother of Sorrows Lenten meals

Holy Mother of Sorrows will hold a Lenten potato pancake and clam chowder dinner from 2 to 7 p.m. Friday, March 16, in the parish hall.

Donation is $10. Takeouts are available.

Menu includes pancakes, soup, dessert and beverage.

Holy Mother of Sorrows Church will hold its second Lenten fish fry dinner from 3 to 7 p.m. Friday, March 23. Dinner includes two pieces of fish, french fries, vegetable, coleslaw, roll and beverage.

Donation is $10. Tickets will be available at the door on the day of the event.

Progress Committee

meetings and 5K run

Dupont Progress Committee will hold two meeting dates this month. The first is at 6:30 p.m. Thursday, March 15, at the Dupont Municipal Building. Back by popular demand, the committee is planning to continue the 5K run that they sponsored for the borough centennial. Anyone interested in helping continue this event is welcome to attend this meeting.

The regular meeting of the Dupont Progress Committee will be held at 6:30 p.m. Thursday, March 21, at the Dupont Municipal Building.

Railroad crossing repairs

Norfolk Southern will be working on the railroad crossing, adding new rails and paving on Main Street. Work will begin Monday, April 30, and is expected to be completed Friday, May 4. More details to follow.

Lions Club news

Dupont Lions Club is accepting applications for the Hometown Heroes Banner program. This street banner program is designed to honor the active duty military, retirees and veterans of Dupont who honorably served and/or continue to serve the United States of America.

The sponsorship for each banner is $200, payable when submitting sponsorship form. Sponsorship forms are available at the Dupont Borough Building, the Dupont VFW or from any Dupont Lions Club member. Please note the deadline to submit applications is fast approaching on Monday, March 12.

Dupont Lions Club will hold its annual park cleanup, headed by Lion Mark Kowalczyk, beginning at 8 a.m. Saturday, March 24.

Dupont will have the borough trucks available and also trucks and equipment from Marek Landscaping is being donated for the effort. All that is needed are volunteers. Any organization or individual that can help for all day or just a few hours would be greatly appreciated. Tasks include raking leaves, debris removal and planting.

Dupont Lions Club’s annual Easter egg hunt will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, March 31, at the Dupont Little League Field. The event is open to community children ages 10 and younger. More than 450 goodies bags will litter the field. Also, six bikes will be awarded in the three designated age groups. Donations are greatly appreciated for this poplar holiday event.

The Lions Club’s next meeting is at 6:30 p.m. Monday, March 12, at the VFW Post Home on Main Street.

Hose company thanks

Dupont Volunteer Hose Company extends its thanks to all who supported the annual pancake breakfast. More than 650 meals were served. Winners of the Lottery trees were Frank Skrzysowski, first, and Eric Sklaka, second.

Dupont Volunteer Hose Company will meet at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, March 14, at the hose company home.

Sacred Heart news

The Sacred Heart Parish Picnic Committee will hold an open meeting at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday, March 21, in the church hall. All parishioners of Sacred Heart of Jesus Church or any interested individuals are invited to this very important meeting to discuss the future of the church’s annual “Picnic of Picnics.”

There is a dire need of volunteers to help conduct a picnic this year. The committee is seeking new leadership and new ideas. If not enough interest in continuing the picnic is shown on March 21, there is a good chance the picnic will be cancelled.

The Rev. Thomas Petro and members of the Pastoral Outreach Apostolate will

begin to visit the home-bound members of Sacred Heart of Jesus Parish and will administer confession, anointing of the sick and Holy Communion. If you have a loved one homebound and would like to be added to the monthly home visitation list, please call the parish office at 570-654-3713 at your earliest convenience.

Sacred Heart Holy Name Society 300 Club announced its raffle winners for week one. They are: first place, Carol Coyne, $100; second, J.S. Bonczek, $50; third, Trish Slusarczyk, $25 and fourth, Irene Kivak, $25.

Sacred Heart Parish is in need of a part-time church sexton. If interested, submit resume to the attention of the Rev. Petro by Friday, March 23.

Gorzkie Zale, the traditional Polish-language Lenten devotions known as “Bitter Lamentations” will be held at 3 p.m. Sunday, March 18, at Sacred Heart Church. The choir of Nativity of Our Lord Parish in Duryea will join Sacred Heart Choir in the singing for the program. The Rev. Gregory Finn, OSJ, will be the guest homilist.

A light reception will follow in the church hall. All are invited to attend.

Bowling awards

Congratulations to Elko’s Bamtam Girls Flaming Strikes, which includes Michaela Kaminski, Macie Kivler, Giovanna Bobbouine, Julianna O’Hop and Emily Savakinas, who won first place at the WVUSBC All Stars at Chacko’ Lanes in Wilkes-Barre this past weekend. They also won a plaque for high series.

Elm Street Sportsmen’s meeting

Elm Street Sportsmen’s Club will meet at 7 p.m. Sunday, March 11, at the Polish American Citizens’ Club on Elm Street, Dupont. John Lizak will preside.

Little League registration, cash bingo fundraiser

Avoca/Dupont Little League will have its final registration for the spring season from 6 to 7:30 p.m. Monday, March 12, at the little league field.

The cost to register for the season is $65 for one player and $80 for two or more players from the same household.

New players must supply three forms of proof of residency and a copy of the player’s birth certificate.

In other Little League news, the league’s third annual cash bingo fundraiser will take place Sunday, April 29, at the Queen of the Apostles Parish Hall, 742 Spring St. Doors open at noon and games begin at 1 p.m.

There will be 15 regular games worth $100 each, three special games worth $150 each and a coverall game worth $250.

Also, there will be a basket raffle and food available for purchase.
