Happy Mother’s Day! Enjoy your day!
May is a busy month for our local Veterans of Foreign Wars and AMVETS posts.
Together with the Boy Scouts and volunteers, the VFW and AMVETS will begin the removal of the old flags from both the Sacred Heart and Holy Mother of Sorrows cemeteries starting at 6 p.m. Monday, May 14. Then at 6 p.m. Wednesday, May 16, placement of the new flags will take place at both cemeteries. All volunteers are asked to meet at the VFW Post before heading out to the cemeteries.
At 5 p.m. Friday, May 25, the AMVETS will place more than 100 white wooden crosses on the memorial lawn next to the municipal building. Anyone who would like to volunteer can contact any AMVETS member.
The weekend of May 26-27, VFW Post 4909 will conduct its annual poppy drive outside of Sacred Heart Church after all the weekend Masses.
And the biggest event of the month, the annual Memorial Day Parade sponsored by VFW Post 4909 and the AMVETS will be held Monday, May 28. The parade starts at 10:30 a.m. beginning at Main Street and turning onto Chestnut Street and ending at the Dupont Memorial grounds adjacent to the municipal building, where services immediately follow the parade.
Holy Mother of Sorrows also will hold a Memorial Day observation to honor the parish’s veterans who served in World War I, World War II, The Korean War, Vietnam and The Gulf Wars. A solemn ceremony will be held Sunday, May 27, immediately following the 9 a.m. Sunday Mass at the flagpole in front of the church.
The names on the monument, along with anyone else not listed who served our country in these wars, will be read aloud. If you or a family member of the parish who served in these conflicts would like their name added, please contact Paul Kaspriskie at 570-655-0981 or Paul.Kaspriskie@wilkes.edu.
The monthly meeting of VFW Post 4909 will be held at the post home at 7:30 p.m. Monday, June 4. Commander Mark Roney will preside.
The Home Association meeting will follow.
Refreshments will be served after both meetings.
