Two great events kick off in July, starting with the 56th annual open pit chicken barbecue sponsored by the Holy Mother of Sorrows YMS of R, which will be held from noon to 6 p.m. Saturday, July 20, on the parish grounds. Dinner includes half a chicken, french fries, coleslaw, roll, desserts and beverages. There will be an outdoor tent for your dining pleasure and takeouts will be available. Donation is $12. Tickets are available from any member of the YMS of R or can be purchased the day of the event.
The 13th annual Dupont Softball Tournament sponsored by Dupont Youth Baseball will be held Friday, July 19, to Sunday, July 21. Friday night games will be played from 6 to 9 p.m. followed by a fireworks display. Saturday’s play begins at 10 a.m. and continues to 10 p.m. Saturday’s featured event will be the Dizzy Bat Races at 5 p.m.
Sunday games start at 11 a.m. and end at 5 p.m. followed by check presentations and tournament award winner. The 12 teams competing are: Dupont Coalcrackers, Avoca Squirrels, The Bravest, Tush’s Blasters, McNasty’s, Liberty Tax, WB/Scranton Chiropractic, Doc’s, Greater Pitston Fuel, Washed Up, Alcobolics, and KD Dawgs. WB/Chiropractic are defending champions.
There will be raffle prizes, games, 50/50 drawing and T-shirts sales. The Dupont Lions will work the concession stand for the three-day event, offering many homemade foods.
The double elimination, wooden bat tournament will benefit local charities.
UGI’s Get Gas Project in Dupont will begin Phase 2 of construction starting July 15 for the areas of Hill Street, Gill Street, 200 block of Holden Street and Walnut Street from Gill Street to Lolli Lane. Paving will be done in early July on First, Front, Second and Wilson streets. Anyone interested in gas service should submit their application as soon as possible. Applications are available at the municipal office during regular business hours or contact Lucy Sassi, sales/marketing representative for UGI. She will explain the process and send an application for gas service and walk you through the process.
Sacred Heart Picnic
Sacred Heart of Jesus Parish’s 72nd annual picnic will be held Aug. 1-3. John Stevens Polka Band will be featured entertainment Thursday, Aug. 1, and Friday, Aug. 2. Joe Stanky and the Cadets will be featured Saturday, Aug. 3.
The next picnic meeting will be held at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday, July 10, in the church hall. If you wish to volunteer, please contact Chairperson Heather Roche at 570-299-7702. All help is greatly appreciated. Advanced food tickets sales will take place after all Masses the weekends of July 13-14, 20-21 and 27-28 in the church hall.
The Avoca Farmers Market has opened for the season. The market will be held every Wednesday from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at 824 McAlpine St. Some of the vendors scheduled to join the marketplace are: Purple Pepper Farms, Radle’s Farm, J&A Farms, Ayers Orchards, Deep Roots Hard Ciders, Wyld Flower Farms, Space Time Mead and Cider Works, Simply Delicious Bakery, Maaa’s Handmade Goats Milk Soap, Tarnowski’s Brothers Kielbasi and Silly Willy Ice Cream.
Lions Club 5K Run/Walk
Dupont Lions Club will hold its annual 5K Run/Walk on Saturday, Aug. 24, at the Little League Park on Elm Street. Registration forms are available online at runsignup.com/Race/PA/Dupont/DupontLionsClub5K and also available at the Dupont Municipal Building or by contacting any Lion. Registration for adult runners is $25 with shirt or $20 without shirt. Children’s registration is $10 with shirt and $5 without shirt. Registration will end Friday, Aug. 23.
The 1-mile run for kids will start at 9 a.m. The 5K run/walk will start at 9:45 a.m. The kids run is open to young adults 13 and younger. Check-in on race day will be held from 8 to 9:30 a.m.
Dupont Borough collects plastics numbers 1, 2 and 3 only and cans on the first and third Wednesday of each month. Newsprint and papers are collected the second and fourth Wednesday of the month. There is no recycling the fifth Wednesday.
July’s remaining recycling schedule is: July 10, paper; July 17, cans and plastics; July 24, paper; July 31, no recycling.

Dupont Borough is accepting applications for a driver/laborer, CDL preferred. Duties include trash and recycling collections, snow plowing, road maintenance and park and property maintenance. Salary based on experience. Applications are available at the borough office during business hours.
Dupont Borough Council will meet at 7 p.m. Tuesday, July 9, in the James Cocco Council Chambers.
Paper shredding and
Paper shredding and electronic recycling will be held from 3 to 6 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 15, at the Dupont Municipal Building. Shredding will be held in front of the borough building and electronic recycling will be held in the rear.
Compost center open
Greater Pittston Regional Compost Facility, located in the Grimes Industrial Park, 67 Garden Road, Dupont, is open from 8 a.m. to noon Mondays, Tuesdays and Wednesdays.
Yard waste accepted at the site includes grass, leaves and branches no wider than 6 inches. Stumps are not acceptable at the site. Also, please do not mix non-acceptable items such as trash, recycling, dirt, stone, etc. in the loads as it will cause problems for the machinery.
For information, contact your municipal office. Contractor compost prices are: pickup, $10; 1-ton truck, $25; single axle, $45; tri-axle, $75.
Dupont Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 3909 will meet at 7:30 p.m. Monday, Aug. 5, at the post home. Many items will be discussed and reports given by committee members. Commander Mike Hope will preside. Home Association meeting will follow. Food and refreshments will follow after both meetings.
