Dupont Lions Club will sponsor its annual safety stations on Halloween, Thursday, Oct. 31, starting at 6 p.m. The stations will provide hot chocolate and Halloween treats for all the ghouls and goblins and treats for our fury friends, too.
So far, there are two safety stations for this year’s event. The Dupont Youth Baseball Organization will set up a safety station at the Little League Park concession stand serving hot chocolate and hot dogs. The Dupont Crime Watch will set up on Smith Street with ghoulish goodies.
If any organization or individual is interested is setting up a safety station, please contact any Lion. The Lions Club will provide the candy and hot chocolate.
Trunk and treat
Dupont Crime Watch, in conjunction with the Dupont Lions Club, will host a trunk and treat on Sunday, Oct. 27, at the Sacred Heart Church parking lot. The Crime Watch and Lions Club welcome any organization or individual interested in having a decorated vehicle for the event. Prizes will be awarded.

The event also will include a costume contest, kids’ activities and more. Vehicle set-up will be at 3 p.m. and the event starts at 4.
Lions Club meeting
Dupont Lions Club’s monthly meeting will be held at 6:30 p.m. Monday, Oct. 14, at the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post.
Hose company fund
drive and meeting
The 2019 fund drive for the Dupont Volunteer Hose Company is underway. Letters have been sent to all residents of the community, The fire department relies primarily on donations from this yearly fund drive in order to provide the best possible level of fire protection to the community. As always, the fire company does not ask for any specific donation, but is grateful for any and all donations you may be able to make to the department.
If you are interested in becoming a part of the organization, please feel free to stop by the station for an application or call 570-654-5121 for information. The department accepts applications for both fire fighting and non fire fighting members.

Voting location change
Voting in Dupont will have a new location for the Nov. 5 election. Luzerne County Board of Elections has changed the location from the Dupont Municipal Building to the Veterans of Foreign Wars, 401 Main St., Dupont. The doors on Grant Street will be used as the entrance for voters and parking will be in the back on Grant Street. The ADA entrance will be the kitchen entrance off the Grant Street parking lot.
Sacred Heart news
Holy Mother of Sorrows will hold its All Saints Day Solemnity Mass at 7 p.m. Friday, Nov. 1, with memorial readings. Feast of All Souls Day will be observed with Mass at 10 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 2, with memorial readings. Both services will be held in church.
Cemetery Sunday devotions will take place at 1 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 27, at Sacred Heart Church. They will begin with the exposition of the blessed sacrament and the praying of the sorrowful mysteries of the rosary. The names of parishioners who died and were buried from the church since last year’s devotions will be read aloud. After solemn benediction and reposition, a procession will form to the cemetery while the faithful sing the Litany of the Saints. The faithful who cannot walk in the procession may drive to the cemetery. The Rev. Thomas Petro will then bless the cemetery and visitation of the graves will follow. Traditional Polish, Latin and English hymns will be sung. The public is invited to attend and join in praying for the peaceful repose of the souls of all the faithful departed.
Sacred Heart’s Women’s Society will hold its annual Advent pierogi sale. Orders will be taken the weekend of Oct. 19-20 in the church hall after all Masses. Phone orders can be placed until noon Friday, Oct. 25, by calling the parish office. It is important that you place your order in advance so that the proper amount of ingredients can be ordered. Potato and cabbage pierogi will be available. Cost is $8 per dozen.
Residents who have converted to gas or those looking into gas service are reminded there are rebates offered by UGI. UGI offers a variety of incentives to help customers lower their energy bills through the use of high efficiency equipment. Rebates are available for valid UGI customers who install qualifying residential and commercial heating and water between Jan. 1, 2017 and Sept. 30, 2021 and for UGI-PNG customers who install qualifying residential and commercial heating and water heating equipment between Jan. 1, 2018 and Sept. 30, 2022.

Elm Street Sportsmen’s
Elm Street Sportsmen’s Club will meet at 7 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 13, at the Polish American Citizens Club, Elm Street. John Lizak will preside.
Lions food distribution
The monthly food distribution sponsored by the Dupont Lions Club will be held at 4 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 24, at Sacred Heart of Jesus Parish Hall. All qualifying residents of Dupont and Suscon are eligible.
Pittston Area craft fair
Pittston Area, Class of 2020, is holding a craft fair from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 20, at Pittston Area High School. There will be more than 40 vendors selling crafts, plus a 50/50, basket raffles, bake sale and face painting for children.
Little League meetings
Avoca/Dupont Little League will meet at 6 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 13, at the Avoca Borough Building. League officers for the 2019-20 season will be elected. The fall season and continuation of the league’s combining with Pittston City and Duryea, as well as all regular business, will be on the agenda.
Also, at 7 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 17, Greater Pittston Area Little League, consisting of Avoca/Dupont, Duryea and Pittston City, will hold a general meeting to discuss the upcoming merger of these three leagues. The meeting will be held at the Duryea Veterans of Foreign Wars Post, 492 Stephenson St. All officers from each league are required to attend. The meeting is open to the public and anyone interested in the league or in volunteering in any capacity is welcome to attend.
