Dupont Lions Club made the community festive for the holidays by hanging more than 90 holiday snowflakes and swag throughout the town. Thanks to the efforts of the following Lions who braved the cold: Tony Draus, Chris Kalmanowicz, Bart Bryk, Dan Lello, Tom Lello, Bob Price, Mark Wesolowski, Scott Barnak, Henry Klimek, Jeff Roche and Bob Briermeyer.

The town looks bright and festive just in time for Dupont Crime Watch’s annual Christmas tree lighting festival at 4 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 2, at the Dupont Municipal Memorial Park on Chestnut Street. There will be music, kids crafts and games and the reading of “The Night Before Christmas.” This event is free to everyone in the community.

Thanksgiving service

Sacred Heart of Jesus will celebrate Thanksgiving services today, Nov. 22, at 9 a.m.

PA Marching Band’s

Breakfast with Santa

Pittston Area Marching Patriots will host Pancakes and Pajamas with Santa! Wear your favorite PJs for breakfast with Santa from 10 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 9, at the Hughestown Hose Company. Cost is $10 for adults and $8 for children and includes all the pancakes and sausage you can eat with coffee, tea, juice and milk. For tickets, call Debbie Wruble at 570-237-6769. Proceeds benefit the marching band.

Hose company news

Dupont Volunteer Hose Company thanks the community for its generosity to its annual fundraiser. Again, the community stepped forward to support their local fire department.

The hose company is in need of new volunteers. Anyone 18 years of age and older is eligible to become a volunteer firefighter. Stop by the company home for more information. The company is also looking into starting a junior firefighter company. More details will follow.

Holy Mother of Sorrows Christmas schedule

Holy Mother of Sorrows announced its schedule for the Christmas season.

An Advent service will be held at 8 and 10:30 a.m. Sunday, Dec. 23.

Church decorating for Christmas will take place at 11:30 a.m. Sunday, Dec. 23.

 Christmas Masses will be held at 4 and 10 p.m. Christmas Eve. Christmas Day, Mass will be held at 10 a.m.

Lions food distribution

The monthly food distribution sponsored by the Dupont Lions Club will be held from 4 to 5 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 29, at Sacred Heart of Jesus parish hall. All qualifying residents of Dupont and Suscon are eligible.

AMVETS Christmas party

AMVETS Post 189 will hold its annual Christmas party from 6 to 10 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 13, at the Dupont Hose Company on Main Street. Veterans from the Department of Veterans Affairs Medical Center and the Gino Merli Veterans Center will be guests of honor. The party is open to the public and tickets are $20.

Reading Wonderland

Pittston Area, in partnership with Luzerne County Head Start Inc. and ABC Kidde Kampus, will present their annual Reading Wonderland for parents and children up to fourth grade. The event will be held at Pittston Area High School from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 9.

Join in for a day filled with fun literacy activities, crafts, a free picture with Santa and snacks. This holiday event is free to all children residing in the Pittston Area School District.

VFW parties

Dupont Veterans of Foreign War Post 4909 Home Association will hold its annual Christmas party at the post home Saturday, Dec. 8. Millennium will provide the musical entertainment from 9 p.m. to 1 a.m. A dinner buffet will be served from 7:30 to 8:45 p.m. The bar will be open from 7:30 p.m. to 12:30 a.m. This party sells out every year, so please make reservations early by calling the VFW. Door prizes will be awarded through the evening.

The Polka Sunday Christmas party will be held from 2 to 6 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 9, at the VFW Post. Joe Stanky and the Cadets will be the featured entertainment. Door prizes will be awarded. Polkas are held every Sunday from 2 to 6 unless otherwise specified. Admission is $15, which includes a meal.

Donations of a Christmas gift for veterans from the Gino Merli Center and Department of Veterans Affairs Medical Center are greatly appreciated. Drop off your donations at the designated wrapped boxes at the VFW.

The Dupont VFW Post 4909 Home Association will hold its annual New Year’s Eve party at the post home Monday, Dec. 31. A gala evening is planned with a dinner buffet served from 7:30 to 9 p.m. The bar will be open from 7:30 p.m. to 1:30 a.m. Meat and cheese trays, snacks, coffee and donuts will be available throughout the evening until midnight. Donation is $40 per person. Reservations may be made by seeing Bob at the VFW or calling 570-654-9104. Deadline for tickets is Dec. 30. No tickets will be sold at the door. This party will sell out, so make your reservations early and ring in the new year together.

Social memberships to VFW Post 4909 for 2019 are now available at the post home. They are valid through Dec. 31, 2019 at a cost of $12 per year.

Tax collection hours

Dupont Borough Tax Collector Joy Tetlak-Adelstein notifies residents of the November and December office hours and due dates for 2018 school and county/municipal real estate taxes.

November office hours are 9 to 11 a.m. Tuesdays, Nov. 20 and Nov. 27.

Last day to pay school real estate taxes at face value is Friday, Nov. 30.

December office hours are 9 to 11 a.m. Tuesdays, Dec. 4 and Dec. 18 and 9 to 10 a.m. Fridays, Dec. 14 and Dec. 28.

Last day to pay school real estate tax third installment is Monday, Dec. 17. Last day to pay county/municipal real estate taxes is Monday, Dec. 31.

Payments must be received or postmarked on or before the due dates. If paying after Dec. 15, only official bank checks or certified checks will be accepted. Please refer to your tax bill for further instructions.

Residents may pay their taxes during office hours at the Dupont Municipal Building, 600 Chestnut St.

Residents who are unable to pay their taxes at the municipal building can mail their payment to: Joy Tetlak-Adelstein, tax collector, Dupont Municipal Building, 600 Chestnut St., Dupont, PA 18641. To obtain a receipt, please include a self-addressed, stamped envelope and the entire bill with your payment. The taxpayer copy of the bill will be returned to you. If you do not wish to obtain a receipt, please include the tax collector copy of the bill with your payment.
