The First Responders Thanksgiving Appreciation Dinner sponsored by Holy Mother of Sorrows will be held from 11:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 9, at the Frank Bednash Memorial Hall, 212 Wyoming Ave., Dupont. All veterans and first responders from Dupont, Avoca and Pittston Twp. are invited. All parishioners and friends of our church also are invited to attend. The menu will include turkey, mashed potatoes, stuffing, corn, gravy, cranberry sauce and cake. Dinner is free of charge. Prayer service

The 11th Community Thanksgiving Prayer Service will be held at 7 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 24, at Holy Mother of Sorrows, 212 Wyoming Ave. Parishioners from Holy Mother of Sorrows and Sacred Heart of Jesus, and all who live in Dupont and surrounding areas are invited to attend. Refreshments will be served after the service in the parish hall.

Elko’s Thanksgiving Turkey Shoot

Elko’s Jr. Bowlers will hold their annual Thanksgiving Turkey Shoot on Saturday, Nov. 23. Bowlers from three junior leagues will be vying to win their prize turkey for Thanksgiving. This event is the highlight of the season with more than 80 bowlers, ages 5 to 17, taking part in the turkey shoot. Last year’s winners were Michael Basta, Madison Wisniewski, Nick Collins, Scarlett O’Hop, Paige Bittman and Hayden Heppding.

Polling place change

Voting in Dupont will have a new location for the Nov. 5 general elections. Luzerne County Board of Elections sent postcards to registered voters. The new location has changed to the Veteran of Foreign Wars, 401 Main St., Dupont.

The doors on Grant Street will be used as the entrance for voters and parking will be in the back on Grant Street, as well. The ADA entrance will be the kitchen entrance off the Grant Street parking lot. Entrances will be marked.

VFW holiday gift collections

Dupont Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 4909 will again be a drop-off point for the Marine Toys for Tots Foundation Campaign.

In addition, the VFW is collecting gifts for men and women at the Department of Veterans Affairs Medical Center and the Gino Merli Veterans Center.

Some of the items on the wish list are white socks, clothing items, toiletries and recreational items like puzzles, books and playing cards. Monetary gifts are also accepted and greatly appreciated. A list of all items the veterans need is available at the Dupont VFW.

VFW meeting

The Dupont VFW will meet at 7:30 p.m. Monday, Nov. 4, at the post home. Plans for the Veterans Day ceremonies, which will be held Monday, Nov. 11, will be discussed. Commander Mike Hope will preside.

The Home Association meeting will follow. Refreshments will be served after both meetings.

Memorial lawn improvements

A makeover of the memorial lawn adjacent to the municipal building has begun again with the installation of the brick memorial patio. Mark Kowalczyk, Dupont Lion, is chairman of the renovations. He will finish the patio and brick wall before the winter and finish in the spring with the addition of flower beds and landscaping. There are six memorial bricks remaining available for purchase. Each brick costs $100. Contact Patty McDonald at the Dupont Municipal Building if you are interested in purchasing a brick.

Lions Club news

Tickets for Dupont Lions Club’s annual fundraiser to match the daily number are on available from any Lion or at Hub One. The cost is $10 and the contest will run from Nov. 24 to Dec. 21. All proceeds go to fund the Easter egg hunt, Christmas lights, Halloween safety stations and the playground upgrades.

Dupont Lions Club will host the district Eye Bank meeting at 6:30 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 7, at the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 4909.

The Lions Club will begin making the season bright by hanging up the holiday lights on Sunday, Nov. 17.

The Lions will hold a Diabetes Awareness Program at their monthly meeting at 6:30 p.m. Monday, Nov. 25, at the VFW. This meeting will be open to all interested residents of Dupont.

The monthly food distribution sponsored by the Dupont Lions will be held Thursday, Nov. 21, at Holy Mother of Sorrows Parish Hall. All qualifying resident of Dupont and Suscon are eligible.

AMVETS meeting

The AMVETS will hold their monthly meeting at 7 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 30, at the Polish American Citizens Club. The AMVETS Auxiliary will meet at 6:30 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 30, at borough building.

Gas rebates

Residents who have converted to gas or for those looking into gas service there are rebates offered by UGI. UGI offers a variety of incentives to help customers lower their energy bills through the use of high efficiency equipment. Rebates are available for valid UGI customers who install qualifying residential and commercial heating and water between Jan. 1, 2017 and Sept. 30, 2021 and valid UGI-PNG customers who install qualifying residential and commercial heating and water heating equipment between Jan. 1, 2018 and Sept. 30, 2022. Medicine disposal

You can safely dispose of unused or expired medicine by dropping them in the prescription collection drop box located inside the Dupont Municipal Building during regular business hours from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Friday.

Please remove personal information from all bottles.

Items accepted are: prescriptions, prescription patches and ointments, over the counter medications, vitamins, sample and medication for pets.

Non-acceptable items include: thermometers, hydrogen peroxides, inhalers and needles, medications from businesses or clinical sand aerosol cans.

Trunk or treat

Dupont Lions Club and Dupont Crime Watch held their third annual trunk or treat Oct. 27 in the parking lot of Sacred Heart Church. More than 200 children attended, visiting 25 decorate vehicles to collect Halloween treats.
