Sacred Heart of Jesus will host a Thanksgiving Ecumenical Service at 7 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 18. Holy Mother of Sorrows pastor, the Rev. Zbigniew Dawid, will deliver a homily. A collection will be taken in support of the Greater Pittston Food Bank. A social will follow in the church hall. All are invited to participate. Volunteers are asked to prepare desserts for the social.

Holy Mother of Sorrows will celebrate a Thanksgiving Eve Mass at 7 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 21.

Sacred Heart of Jesus will celebrate Thanksgiving services at 9 a.m. Thanksgiving Day, Thursday, Nov. 22.

Tree lighting

The Dupont Crime Watch will sponsor its annual Christmas Tree Lighting Festival at 4 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 2, at the Dupont Municipal Memorial Park on Chestnut Street. There will be music, crafts, games and the reading of “The Night Before Christmas.”

Coat giveaway at Pittston Area produce market

There will be a giveaway of gently used coats for adults and kids at the monthly children’s produce market sponsored by Pittston Area School District from 3:45 to 5:30 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 20, at the middle school on New Street, Pittston. The market is available to all families who have children attending school in the Pittston Area School District. No proof of income is required. Food items must be picked up on the day of the food drive.

While registration for the produce market is required a week in advance, the coat giveaway is open to the public without advance registration.

Lions food distribution

The monthly food distribution sponsored by the Dupont Lions Club will be held from 4 to 5 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 29, at Sacred Heart of Jesus parish hall. All qualifying residents of Dupont and Suscon are eligible.

Council news

Dupont Council voted to increase the 2019 refuse fees by $10. The new senior rate will be $95; family rate, $125, and commercial rate, $160.

There will be a change to a dual stream collection of recyclables. Commingled plastics and cans will be collected the first and third Wednesdays of each month and paper and cardboard will be collected the second and fourth Wednesdays. There will be no recycling on the fifth Wednesday of the month.

Dupont Borough received grant funding through the Department of Environmental Protection Agency for new 32-gallon recycling containers. The borough’s local match for this grant may be passed on to the residents. The new containers will be available to residents in 2019. The recycling containers are property of Dupont Borough and residents will be required to sign a receipt for the container.

Landlords are reminded to update the tenant listing with the borough by the end of November. Forms are available on the borough website or contact the borough secretary at 570-655-6216.

Permits are needed for all types of work, including driveways, garages, sheds, roofs, electric, plumbing, replacing doors or windows, and all types of home remodeling, change of use, additions, etc. Check the borough website or contact BHW Construction Consultants at 570-270-3900 to check if permits are required.

Dupont Public Works Department has scheduled the last pickup of yard waste on Friday, Nov. 30.

Winter road maintenance worker applications are now being accepted. Dupont Borough will be accepting applications for part time, plow truck drivers. Those hired will work as needed. Please stop by the municipal office for an application. Also, CDL driver applications are being accepted for the refuse and recycling trucks.

Residents who have converted to gas or those looking into gas service are reminded UGI offers a variety of rebates and incentives to help customers lower their energy bills through the use of high efficiency equipment. Rebates are available for customers who install qualifying residential and commercial heating and water heating equipment between Jan. 1, 2017 and Sept. 30, 2021. Visit www.ugi.com/rebates for the current allowances offered by UGI and rebate applications.

VFW parties

Dupont Veterans of Foreign War Post 4909 Home Association will hold its annual Christmas party at the post home Saturday, Dec. 8. Millennium will provide the musical entertainment from 9 p.m. to 1 a.m. A dinner buffet will be served from 7:30 to 8:45 p.m. The bar will be open from 7:30 p.m. to 12:30 a.m. This party sells out every year, so please make reservations early by calling the VFW. Door prizes will be awarded through the evening.

The Polka Sunday Christmas party will be held from 2 to 6 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 9, at the VFW Post. Joe Stanky and the Cadets will be the featured entertainment. Door prizes will be awarded. Polkas are held every Sunday from 2 to 6 unless otherwise specified. Admission is $15, which includes a meal.

Donations of a Christmas gift for veterans from the Gino Merli Center and Department of Veterans Affairs Medical Center are greatly appreciated. Drop off your donations at the designated wrapped boxes at the VFW.

The Dupont VFW Post 4909 Home Association will hold its annual New Year’s Eve party at the post home Monday, Dec. 31. A gala evening is planned with a dinner buffet served from 7:30 to 9 p.m. The bar will be open from 7:30 p.m. to 1:30 a.m. Meat and cheese trays, snacks, coffee and donuts will be available throughout the evening until midnight. Donation is $40 per person. Reservations may be made by seeing Bob at the VFW or calling 570-654-9104. Deadline for tickets is Dec. 30. No tickets will be sold at the door. This party will sell out, so make your reservations early and ring in the new year together.

Social Memberships to VFW Post 4909 for 2019 are now available at the post home. They are valid through Dec. 31, 2019 at a cost of $12 per year.

Tax collection hours

Dupont Borough Tax Collector Joy Tetlak-Adelstein notifies residents of the November and December office hours and due dates for 2018 school and county/municipal real estate taxes.  

November office hours are 9 to 11 a.m. Tuesdays, Nov. 20 and Nov. 27.  

Last day to pay school real estate taxes at face value is Friday, Nov. 30. 

December office hours are 9 to 11 a.m. Tuesdays, Dec. 4 and Dec. 18 and 9 to 10 a.m. Fridays, Dec. 14 and Dec. 28.

Last day to pay school real estate tax third installment is Monday, Dec. 17. Last day to pay county/municipal real estate taxes is Monday, Dec. 31.

Payments must be received or postmarked on or before the due dates. If paying after Dec. 15, only official bank checks or certified checks will be accepted.  Please refer to your tax bill for further instructions.   

Residents may pay their taxes during office hours at the Dupont Municipal Building, 600 Chestnut St. 

Residents who are unable to pay their taxes at the municipal building can mail their payment to: Joy Tetlak-Adelstein, tax collector, Dupont Municipal Building, 600 Chestnut St., Dupont, PA 18641. To obtain a receipt, please include a self-addressed, stamped envelope and the entire bill with your payment. The taxpayer copy of the bill will be returned to you. If you do not wish to obtain a receipt, please include the tax collector copy of the bill with your payment.
