Dupont Borough Council made a few changes at its January meeting regarding the police department. After a seven-year absence, Dupont now has full-time police coverage. Council appointed Bryan Besecker and Mike Kowanick to full-time patrolmen, effective immediately. Dupont has not had full-time officers since the retirement of Police Chief Anthony DeMark back in 2011.

Reviewing other options, Dupont had been one of several municipalities that were members of a study group looking to consolidate under the Northeast Regional Police Department. Dupont chose to drop out of the study last year. Mayor Daniel Lello, a member of the study group for two years, announced back in October that Dupont Borough has opted out of the Regional Police Study Group, citing inequities in the project costs for Dupont. He commented at the time: “The project lacked cost justification for Dupont Borough to continue in the regionalization of the police department.” Mayor Lello also stated he and all council members will keep all options open and continue open dialogue with the study group.

Also, Richard Janesko, director of public safety for the past year, resigned his position effective Jan. 1, 2018. He has accepted a position in his hometown of Moosic. Council appointed Sean Doran as director of public safety. Attending his last meeting in Dupont, Richard thanked everyone he has worked with and was pleased to turn over the keys to Doran, a man he has known his entire life.

Next meeting of Dupont Council will be held at 7 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 13, in the James Cocco Council Chambers. Come and meet the new director of public safety.
