Dupont Youth Baseball Organization will conduct registration and sign-ups for the upcoming 2019 T-ball/baseball season. Sign-ups will be held from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 19, at the Dupont Borough Building.

Registration is open to all boys and girls ages 3 through 7. There are no residential restrictions to play in Dupont so all children from the area are welcome.

There is no registration fee this season and no additional fundraisers are required. This season the league will operate based solely upon donations and fundraisers held locally by members of the DYBO volunteer group.

Coaches and volunteers are needed and welcome.

Tree collections

The Department of Public Works will collect Christmas trees Fridays during January.

Refuse and recycling


Deadline for refuse/recycling registration is Jan. 31.

Dupont Borough has changed its recycling collections from single stream to dual stream. The new recycling schedule which is now in effect is as follows:

The first and third Wednesday is collection of plastic, cans and bottles only. Please use the new 32-gallon containers for these recyclables. The regular rectangular containers will be used the second and fourth Wednesday of the month for paper only.

The 2019 refuse bags are now available for purchase. Costs is $95 for seniors; $125 for individual/family and $160 for commercial. There will be additional billing to large commercial properties for glass disposal. Glass disposal for residential properties is included in their cost.

Each resident will receive a 32-gallon recycling container and lid when their 2019 refuse payment is made. Residents will be asked to sign for the 32-gallon containers and also can update their phone numbers and email addresses for the borough files. Residents are reminded of the weight limit.

The 2019 fee includes 52 refuse bags, recycling pickup and yard waste collection. Large yard waste disposal projects, such as tree cutting or bush removal, will be at a fee of $15 for small items and $25 for large items.

Special collection dates will be set during 2019 for electronics and tires.

Holy Mother of Sorrows game night

Holy Mother of Sorrows is sponsoring an evening of games at 6 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 26, in the church hall. The parish would like to invite everyone, young and old, to come for an evening of games and fellowship.  There will be Pokeno, “Dupont Pitch,” card games and other board games for your enjoyment, or you can just get out for an evening and share some conversation with your fellow parishioners. 

Organizers ask that you bring a light snack for all to enjoy if you plan on attending. The sign-up sheet will be in the church vestibule.  


Holy Mother of Sorrows


Holy Mother of Sorrows YMS of R will hold its annual installation dinner at 6 p.m. Monday, Jan. 28, at the Frank M. Bednash Hall. If you plan on attending, please contact Anthony Shumlas at 570-606-6237 by Monday, Jan. 21.

ANS-Adoration of the Most Blessed Sacrament organizational meeting will be held at 6 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 22, at Frank Bednash Hall. All members and interested parishioners are invited and welcome to attend.

Crime Watch meeting

Dupont Crime Watch will meet at 7 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 29, in the municipal building.

Lions food distribution

Dupont Lions Club’s monthly food distribution will be held from 4 to 5 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 24, at Sacred Heart of Jesus Parish Hall on Lackawanna Avenue. All qualifying residents of Dupont and Suscon are eligible.

The Lions are in need of volunteers for this food drive. If you are able to help, please meet at Sacred Heart at 2 p.m.

Office help

Dupont Borough is accepting applications for part-time office help. Applications are available at the borough building during business hours.

Greater Pittston Little League registration,

Night at the Races

Online registration for the Greater Pittston Area Little League spring season is now open. The league includes Avoca, Dupont, Duryea and Pittston City. The cost for each division is: T-ball, $25; coach pitch, $45, minors and majors, $75. The family maximum is $110. A ticket raffle will not be held this year. The league will have a Night at the Races on Saturday, Jan. 26, at the former Seton Catholic High School, 37 William St., Pittston. Doors open at 6 p.m. and races begin at 7. Admission is $5 at the door and includes food, soda and water. This is a BYOB event. Those attending must be 21 or older.

Hose company breakfast

Mark your calendar: Dupont Volunteer Hose Company’s 54th annual all-you-can-eat breakfast will be held from 7 a.m. to noon Sunday, March 3, at the hose company home on Main Street. Cost will be $8 for adults and $4 for children under 12. The menu will include the hose company’s famous homemade sausage, pancakes, scrambled eggs, coffee and juice.

The Dupont Volunteer Hose Company meets the second Wednesday of each month. The next meeting of the hose company will be held at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 13, at the company home on Main Street. New members are always welcome.

Church flea market

Save the date: Sacred Heart of Jesus will hold its second annual flea market Saturday, May 4, and Sunday, May 5. If you have items in good condition that you no longer want or need, you are kindly asked to hold onto to them until April, at which time the church will begin accepting donations. Items that will be collected are household items, toys, holiday decorations and more. Please note electronics and clothing will not be accepted.
