Dupont Borough officials have issued a disaster emergency declaration as of March 16. Public access to Dupont’s public buildings, including the borough building and the DPW garage, will be restricted.
Dupont Borough will continue normal operations, and those seeking to do public business may call the borough at 570-655-6216, ext. 101.

At this time, the Hemlock Basketball Court and the Elm Street Playground are closed.
Council may announce further restrictions. Refer to the borough website dupontpa.us for additional information and updates.
Tax Collector Susan Gregory announces that the tax office is closed. Payments will be accepted by mail only. Only checks or money orders will be accepted for payment. No cash payments will be accepted. Include a self addressed, stamped envelope for the receipt to be returned.
Lions food distribution
The location for this month’s food distribution sponsored by the Dupont Lions has been changed. The food distribution will be held from 4 to 5 p.m. Thursday, March 26, at the Dupont Municipal Building. Workers will bring packages out to your vehicles in the front parking area.
Crime Watch news
Dupont Crime Watch’s meeting set for Tuesday, March 31, is cancelled.
Dupont Borough is working on paving streets this year in areas where the gas line installation is complete. These areas include the following streets: Gill, Highland, Hill, parts of Walnut, part of Center, Liberty, Monroe, Bridge and Harding. All residents planning on switching to gas are encouraged to notify the borough so that a paving schedule can be put in place to avoid any future pave cuts after the streets are paved. UGI also has a rebate program for gas equipment purchases. The current hookup fee under the Get Gas Program has been reduced to $2,158. Information is available at the borough office.
The annual electronics recycling sponsored by Dupont Borough will be held Aug. 6.
American Red Cross will hold a blood drive in Sacred Heart Parish hall from 1 to 6 p.m. Tuesday, May 19.
Dupont Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 4909 will meet at 7:30 p.m. Monday, April 6, at the post. Many items will be discussed and reports given. Commander Mike Hope will preside. The Home Association will follow. Refreshments will be served after both meetings.
Holy Mother of Sorrows news
The Lenten potato pancake and clam chowder dinner sponsored by the Holy Mother of Sorrows Church scheduled for Friday, March 20, was cancelled. Those who bought tickets will receive a refund or tickets will be honored at rescheduled time for dinner.
Holy Mother of Sorrows is canceling its School of Christian Living (Sunday school) as well as First Communion classes until further notice. Lenten retreat for the Scranton Seniorate scheduled for Saturday, March 28 is cancelled.
As of now, Breakfast with the Bunny is still scheduled for Sunday, April 5.
Little League news
Greater Pittston Area Little League has cancelled its March 24 meeting and postponed Night at the Races, which was scheduled for Friday, March 27. A new date will be announced.
Sacred Heart news
Stations of the Cross at Sacred of Jesus Church are cancelled, as is the Gorzkie Zale Polish Lenten devotions.
Sacred Heart of Jesus Church will hold its annual flea market in the church hall the weekend of May 2-3. Collection of items is still taking place through April 22. Items can be placed at the entrance of the church basement. Items that will be accepted include household items, toys and holiday decorations. Please note that electronics and clothing will not be accepted. All proceeds benefit the parish building fund.
The next picnic meeting will be held at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday, April 22, in the church hall. All are invited and encouraged to attend. Each month leading up to the picnic, the parish is asking for particular items that are needed for the picnic. The requested donations for March are instant lottery tickets. Parishioners can place tickets in the collection basket once the church reopens.
The Holy Name Society of Sacred Heart Parish’s 300 Club raffle winners are first prize, $100, David Mackin; second prize, $50, Austin Balent; third pirze, $25, Mike Walsh, and fourth prize, $25, Joe Champi.
AMVETS Post 189’s annual lottery fundraiser is now underway. Tickets are available from any member or at the Dupont Borough Building. Ticket donation is $5 for two numbers for the month of May.
