This is a busy weekend in Dupont with two great events taking place.

Holy Mother of Sorrows will hold its 56th annual open pit chicken barbecue, sponsored by the Young Men’s Society of the Rosary, from noon to 6 p.m. Saturday, July 20, on the parish grounds. Servings will be held from noon to 6 p.m. Dinner includes half a chicken, french fries, coleslaw, roll desserts and beverages. There will be an outdoor tent for your dining pleasure and takeouts will be available.

Donation is $12.Tickets are available from any member of the YMS of R or can purchased on the day of the event.

Also this weekend is the 13th annual Dupont Softball Tournament, which began Friday and runs thru Sunday, July 21. This family fun weekend includes Dizzy Bat Races on Saturday beginning at 5 p.m., basket raffles and of course tournament play from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. Sunday, game plays start at 11 a.m. and ends at 5 p.m. followed by the Hall of Fame Induction, check presentations and tournament champion presentation.

The double elimination/wooden bat tournament will benefit local charities.

Dupont Lions will run the concession stand at the tournament all weekend. Along with the regular menu of hot dogs, pizza and french fries, club members will offer some homemade specialties for the weekend. The extended menu will include porketta sandwiches, pork barbecues, wimpies, mac-n-cheese, broccoli and shells and haluski. Proceeds will benefit the club’s projects, which include Christmas Lights, Halloween Safety Stations, park renovations and Easter Egg Hunt.

Lions Club 5K

Dupont Lions Club will hold its annual 5K Run/Walk at 9 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 24, at the Little League Park on Elm Street. Registration forms are available at and also available at the Dupont Municipal Building or by contacting any Lion. Registration for adult runners is $25 with shirt or $20 without shirt. Children’s registration is $10 with shirt and $5 without shirt. Registration will end Friday, Aug. 23.

The 1-mile run for kids will start at 9 a.m. The 5K run/walk will start at 9:45 a.m. The kids run is open to young adults 13 and younger. Check-in on race day will be held from 8 to 9:30 a.m.

Lions Club is also seeking sponsors for the 5K Run. There is a Gold Level with a donation of $100 and Silver Sponsors with a donation of $50. Gold sponsors will have their business logo printed on the back of the race T-shirts and Silver Sponsors will have large print name on the race T-shirts. Sponsorship forms are available at the Dupont Municipal office or by contacting Camryn Lokuta, chairwoman, at 570-540-6954. Sponsorship forms are due by Aug. 2.

Proceeds from the 5K will benefit the Dupont Hose Company and the Pittston Area Leo Club Scholarship Fund. All checks are payable to Dupont Lions 5K.

Lions food distribution

The monthly food distribution sponsored by the Dupont Lions Club will be held at 4 p.m. Thursday, July 24, at Holy Mother of Sorrows Parish Hall on Wyoming Avenue. All qualifying residents of Dupont and Suscon are eligible.

Get gas

UGI’s Get Gas Project in Dupont began Phase 2 of construction on July 15 in the areas of Hill Street, Gill Street, 200 block of Holden Street and Walnut Street from Gill Street to Lolli Lane. Paving began in early July on First, Front, Second and Wilson streets. Anyone interested in gas service should submit their application as soon as possible. Applications are available at the municipal office during regular business hours or contact Lucy Sassi, sales/marketing representative for UGI. Dupont residents interested in converting to gas can contact her at 570-829-8664 and/or email at She will explain the process and send an application for gas service and walk you through the process.

Residents who have converted to gas or those looking into gas service are reminded UGI offers a variety of rebates and incentives to help customers lower their energy bills through the use of high efficiency equipment. Rebates are available for customers who install qualifying residential and commercial heating and water heating equipment between Jan. 1, 2017 and Sept. 30, 2021. Visit for the current allowances offered by UGI and rebate applications.

Sacred Heart Picnic

Time to make the pierogis! Parishioners of Sacred Heart of Jesus will begin making their legendary homemade foods beginning Wednesday, July 24. Volunteers are in need, so if time allows, here is a list of dates and times where help is needed: Wednesday, July 24, early evening, prep onions and sauerkraut; Thursday, July 25, day shift, mix and fry sauerkraut; Friday, July 26, day and evening shift, roll cabbage balls shred cheese and cut potatoes; Saturday, July 27, begin making the pierogis, pinching and cooking cabbage pierogi, preparing potatoes and beginning pinching potato pierogis. This process will continue from Monday, July 29, to Wednesday, July 31, until quota is met. Please contact the rectory office at 570-654-3713 for times. Wednesday, July 31, help also is needed to prep onions and peppers, and Aug. 1-3, help is needed to prepare and cook the piggies.

Sacred Heart of Jesus Parish’s 72nd annual picnic will be held Aug. 1-3. John Stevens Polka Band will be featured entertainment Thursday, Aug. 1, and Friday, Aug. 2. Joe Stanky and the Cadets will be featured Saturday, Aug. 3.

Construction of the stands will take place at 7 a.m. Saturday, July 20.

Advanced food tickets sales will take place after all Masses the weekends of July 20-21 and 27-28 in the church hall.

Paper shredding and

electronics collection

Paper shredding and electronic recycling will be held from 3 to 6 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 15, at the Dupont Municipal Building. Shredding will be held in front of the borough building and electronic recycling will be held in the rear.

VFW meeting

Dupont Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 3909 will meet at 7:30 p.m. Monday, Aug. 5, at the post home. Many items will be discussed and reports will be given by committee members. Commander Mike Hope will preside. The Home Association meeting will follow.

Food and refreshments will follow after both meetings.

VFW Sock Hop

Dupont Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 4909 Home Association will hold a Sock Hop dinner dance Saturday, Sept. 14.

Featured entertainment will be Millennium, playing for your listening and dancing pleasure from 9 p.m. to 1 a.m.

A dinner buffet will be served from 7:30 to 8:45 p.m. and the bar will be open from 7:30 p.m. to 12:30 a.m.

Tickets are $30 per person.

Recycling collections

Dupont Borough collects plastics numbers 1, 2 and 3 only and cans on the first and third Wednesday of each month. Newsprint and papers are collected the second and fourth Wednesday of the month. There is no recycling the fifth Wednesday.

July’s remaining recycling schedule is: July 24, paper; July 31, no recycling.
