The Salvation Army bells are ringing, the sound of Christmas carols fill the air, tinsel-trimmed trees are being decorated and the merriment of the Yuletide season is once again upon us. It’s the time when life’s “angels” bring good tidings and warmth to those in need.
Therefore, it is time for the Greater Pittston American Veterans Post 189’s Christmas party, which will be held from 6 to 10 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 13, at the dance hall of the Dupont Hose Company. The party offers an opportunity for the “angels” to sponsor a veteran to attend.
The party will consist of a full buffet and a variety of beverages. There also will be dancing to the music of DJ Mike Tryzskowski. Donation is $ 20. The party is open to the public and veterans alike.
Post 189 along with their Ladies Auxiliary are working to bring holiday joy during the season to the veterans residing at the Gino Merli and Department of Veterans Affairs medical centers. For 10 years or more, Post 189 has sponsored veterans at both centers. Now is a time when local businesses, neighbors and fellow veterans can open their hearts and continue to show generosity to our veterans who are in need and who devoted so much. Please help the Greater Pittston AMVETS carry on this meaningful tradition. For $50 you can sponsor a vet, allowing them to enjoy a night of good food, music and dancing, camaraderie, and a gift they will receive. For many, this may be the only time these men and women get out, and the only gifts they receive during the holiday season.
So please local businesses, neighbors, and fellow veterans, let’s bring the meaning and purpose of Christmas into these veterans’ lives. You can send your donation by check made payable to AMVETS Post 189 addressed to Commander Bernard McDonald, 126 Main St., Dupont, PA 18641. Also, tickets to the party can be obtained by calling Commander McDonald at 570-817-4858 or calling Chaplain Richard White at 570-407-2044 or at the door.
The AMVETS aren’t the only organization spreading Christmas Cheer. This weekend the Dupont Crime Watch and Sacred Heart Parish will sponsor holiday events starting with ...
Christmas tree lighting
Dupont Crime Watch will sponsor its second annual Christmas Tree Lighting Festival at 4 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 2, at the Dupont Municipal Memorial Park on Chestnut Street. The festive event will feature plenty of activities for kids, including games, crafts and reading of “Twas the Night Before Christmas” by Mayor Daniel Lello. Assorted snacks and hot chocolate will be served. You didn’t hear this from me, but Santa and his friends will take time from their busy schedules to visit all the good boys and girls.
Sacred Heart Parish
Sacred Heart Parish will spread Christmas cheer with an evening of Christmas caroling from 6 to 7:30 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 2. Parishioners and friends are invited to meet in the church hall at 6 p.m. for an hour of caroling around the neighborhood followed by more hot chocolate and cookies in the parish hall. Dress warmly and bring a flashlight and your jingle bells!
