During the AMVETS State Convention held in June, Dupont AMVETS Post 189 won the “Top Post Award in PA” for the second year in a row. Post Commander Bernie McDonald also brought home the AMVET of the Year Award. McDonald is one of the five members of AMVETS Post 189 to have won this award. The AMVETS annual picnic will be held at the Plains Lion Pavilion on Sunday, Aug. 26. Winners of Post 189’s essay contest will be the guests of honor. Pittston Area student winners are: eighth grade, Kathryn Koss, second place winner at the state convention; ninth grade, Haley Sworen, first place winner at the state convention; 10th grade, Angelina Pentazer, third place winner at the state convention and 11th grade, Kyle Miscavage, third place winner at the state convention. Sworen’s first place essay was submitted to and will be judged at the National Convention in Orlando, Florida, in August.
