Kids are invited to visit the Greater Pittston YMCA this weekend to swim with Santa. From noon to 2 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 12, you can swim with Santa and play on the Y’s inflatable play structures. Light refreshments and pictures with Santa in the party room will be included. The cost is $3 per adult and $2 for a child for members. For non-members, the cost is $5 for adults and $4 for each child. Pre-register online on the Y’s website.

St. Michael’s cookie walkSt. Michael’s Byzantine Church is having its annual cookie walk from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 12.

Join in the event and create a sampler of homemade cookies. Guests are invited to select their favorite cookies and fill a take-out container from the variety of displays that will be featured. Some popular flavors that will be included are: chocolate chip, peanut butter, Slovak kolachi, cherry winks, Russian tea cakes, Italian pepper cookies, and more. There also will be some grab-and-go pre-made boxes for purchase as well as a holiday basket raffle with Christmas gifts and surprises in each one. The cost is $10 per pound. All proceeds will help with church expenses.

Everyone is asked to please wear masks upon entering the hall. Disposable gloves will be provided to each visitor who is selecting cookies. For information, call Linda at 570-905-7387.

Decorating contest

There will be another holiday home decorating contest this year, presented by the Pittston City Office of Community Development. There will be three categories and one winner in each. The categories are: Best Themed Décor, Best Classic Holiday, and Best in Show. To enter your home, please complete the form that is online at pittstoncity.org. Deadline to submit entries is Wednesday, Dec. 22. The winners will be announced Thursday, Dec. 23, and prizes will be distributed after the holiday.

Library news

Pittston Memorial Library is offering story time at 10 a.m. every Tuesday. The program is for children 5 and younger. Registration is helpful to let the library plan for the number of people attending. A link to register is on the library’s Facebook page. Story time is set to continue Tuesdays through the end of the year. A holiday party will be held Tuesday, Dec. 21.

The library is looking for circulation assistants for part time and evening and weekend hours. There is a job description posted on the library’s Facebook page.

The library’s hours are 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Friday; closed Saturday and Sunday.

Santa Squad donations

Santa Squad members will be collecting toys and monetary donations at Pizza L’Oven, Wyoming Avenue, Exeter, from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 11.

There also will be toy drop-off locations at The Salt Barre, Kennedy Boulevard; Lolliposh, Main Street; Arcaro’s the Next Generation, Pittston Bypass; First Choice Business Solutions, Kennedy Boulevard; The Cycle Yard, Main Street; Hair Color Studio, Pittston Bypass; Pivot Physical Therapy, McAlpine Street, Avoca; Avoca Borough Building, Main Street, Avoca, and the Avenue Diner, Wyoming Avenue, Wyoming.

There also is a collection box at Giuseppe’s Pizzeria, William Street. When you donate a toy to the collection box located in the pizzeria, you will receive a free voucher for either a medium round plain pizza, or a classic Italian, turkey, ham or tuna hoagie, or a chef or Caesar salad. Vouchers can only be used for takeouts and must be redeemed by Thursday, Dec. 23.

Santa shop at St. John the Evangelist

St. John the Evangelist will host its Last Stop Santa Shop from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 11, in the former Seton Catholic Auditorium.

There will be local crafters and artisans, food, live entertainment, door prizes and raffles. Admission is free.
