The Pittston Area girls basketball team left gloves, hats, scarves and socks along Main Street in Pittston for anyone in need. Please feel free to take any item that you find. The team provides this service every winter as a way to give back to the community.

PA clothing sale

Pittston Area’s junior and senior classes are hosting a clothing sale through Sunday, Jan. 31. Some sizes are currently out of stock, but the site will be updated if the sizes become available. Orders can be placed through the link on the high school’s Facebook page. YMCA news

Due to the mandates made by the governor and the Pennsylvania Department of Health, the Greater Pittston YMCA will be closed until Monday, Jan. 4. All child care services are still being offered.

Zoom classes are being offered to Y members. In partnership with the Wilkes-Barre Family YMCA, the Greater Pittston YMCA will have a schedule that will enable you to work virtually with instructors. You can find the schedule of classes on the website at wvymca.org and can register by signing into your account. If you don’t have an account or are having trouble registering, email mmecadon@greaterpittstonymca.org or call 570-823-2191.

Swim lessons are also available for online registration for members and non-members.

Library news

Pittston Memorial Library will be fine free through Friday, Jan. 1. Any materials from the library are covered under this amnesty event.

All items that are returned are quarantined for seven days before coming off of your library account. You may receive an email that says items are overdue while they are in quarantine, these are auto generated based on due date. Your account will not be charged a late fee.

If there are any lost or damaged items, you are responsible for that fee. You can call the library at 570-654-9565 and make a plan for payment.

Thursday, Jan. 21, from 5:30 to 5:45 p.m., Miss Noelle and Miss Kristin will host a book discussion of the graphic novel “White Bird” by R.J. Palacio through Zoom. This will not be recorded. There is a form online to register for the book club.

Friday, Jan. 29, Miss Karen will host a special reading of “I Am Perfectly Designed” by Karamo Brown and Jason “Rachel” Brown, illustrated by Anoosha Syed. The reading will be on the WVIA Education Facebook Page.

The library will be open for porch pickup from 9:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Monday, Dec. 28, and Tuesday, Dec. 29. The library is closed and due to the holiday will not offer porch pickup Thursday, Dec. 31, and Friday, Jan. 1.
