I’ve always considered myself to be an avid sports fan. When I was younger, it seemed that if I wasn’t playing some version of a sport, I was obsessively watching whatever was being shown on ESPN at any given time. At this time of year, with winter sports dominating the airwaves, I would find myself rooting for “my” New England Patriots (a fandom I inherited from my grandmother), while keeping an eye on the calendar that was counting down the days until spring training would begin. After all, baseball was, and remains, my favorite sport. It was always an exciting day when my brother and I would sign-up for Little League, because that officially meant that the season was just around the corner.
