Happy Labor Day! Normally, this is a weekend filled with cookouts, backyard cornhole competitions and kicking back with family and friends around a fire pit as we hold onto the last sunrays of summer. While our festivities will be scaled back a bit this year, we still have one summer celebration left in town that will close out the season on a great note. Or, perhaps I should say notes since there is fantastic music mixed in with this final farewell to summer.

Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 1227 will host an end of summer concert and picnic with the Sperazza Band on Saturday, Sept. 19, on the grounds of the post home, 492 Stephenson St. Takeout meals will be available from 3 to 5 p.m. Music and dinner is from 5 to 9 p.m.

The menu includes hotdogs, hamburgers, sausage and peppers, corn on the cob, French fries and funnel cakes.

Admission is $10, which includes a $5 food credit.

Guests must be 21 or older to attend. Please note guests will be required to wear a mask to enter the event and practice social distancing. Guests also must wear masks when they are not seated at their table. Guests cannot bring chairs or tents.

Staff will have appropriate safety practices in place, including wearing face masks, gloves for ticket takers, face shields and other precautions, including extra cleaning of common areas and lavatories. Soap and hand sanitizer will be available, too.

This event will be limited to no more than 250 people at a time, including staff. Entrance will be on a first come, first served basis.

Happy birthday to Pauline Reedy, who will celebrate her special day Sept. 9.

That’s about it for this week, my friends.
