Thank goodness life is starting to get back to pre-COVID living, at least a little bit. At this time last year, everything was canceled, and we were all staying home except to get groceries, prescriptions or gas. Now, as we begin to see some hope the pandemic is slowly easing, we are seeing some of our favorite local events popping up on community calendars in the region.

One of those events in Duryea is the spring yard sale at St. Mary’s Polish National Catholic Church. The sale will take place from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, May 15, at the church, 200 Stephenson St. Vendors may rent an 8-by-2-foot table space for $10, tables not included. The set-up time is 8 a.m. To reserve a space, please call 570-457-2291.

Collection schedule

Duryea Street Department collection schedule for the week of April 18 is: garbage, Monday, April 19, and Tuesday, April 20, and yard waste, Friday, April 23. Recyclables will not be collected. For information, call 570-655-1299.

Community cleanup

Duryea is partnering with Keeping PA Beautiful to clean up our neighborhoods. Local community and volunteer groups are invited to select a neighborhood that has roadways that need to be cleared of rubbish, blocked curbs, overhangs and more. Interested groups may register the day and time of their cleanup by contacting the borough at 570-655-2829 or carolyn.santee@duryeaborough.com. The borough will provide supplies.

VFW chicken barbecue

The Jimmy Balchune Memorial Fund inaugural barbecue chicken dinner will take place from noon to 6 p.m. Saturday, June 26, at the Duryea Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 1227, 492 Stephenson St. There will be live bands, basket raffles and more. There also will be a cash bar. Tickets, which are $15, can be purchased at the VFW.

CEO food distribution

Duryea Borough’s CEO food drive takes place the second Monday of each month at Germania Hose Company, 430 Foote Ave. Set up is from 12:30 to 1:30 p.m. Food distribution is from 2 to 3 p.m. Volunteers are always welcome.

Any regular recipient who has not picked up food in the last two months has been purged from the list and must reapply. To reapply, please call Lois Hanczyc at 570-457-2482 and leave a message with your name and phone number. Recipients must complete an application before receiving the food.

That’s about it for this week, my friends.

Thanks for reading, and have a great week!
