If you have never visited www.duryeapa.com, you need to soon. The site, founded and moderated by Bernie Stiroh and Mike Lizonitz, offers thousands of photos, documents and sources of information from pre-1960 Duryea.
As Stiroh and Lizonitz prepare to mark the 14th anniversary of the site’s inception, the creators are offering the public the opportunity to have their Duryea-related black and white photos colorized for free. The criteria to participate is as follows: the photos must be from 1960 or earlier and focus on stores, saloons, farms, fire companies, police officers, the Lackawanna River and bridges, street scenes, schools, coal mines, miners, sporting events, churches, church picnics, carnivals, parades, etc. Family photos also may be submitted if nearby Duryea streets or houses are in the background.
The black and white photos should be scanned and saved as jpeg files and then emailed to email@example.com. Upon receipt, they will be colorized and returned to the sender. Stiroh also will conduct free genealogical research for past and present Duryea families. He has access to countless databases and research tools, including census records, birth, marriage and death records, and newspaper articles dating back to the late 1800s.
