Normally, Super Bowl Sunday offers a time to gather with friends and family to enjoy football and good food. Although the pandemic has put the parties on hold, it’s not stopping Duryea’s two veterans organizations from cooking up great takeout Super Bowl food for us.

Duryea American Legion Brennan Regan Post 585 will hold a takeout Super Bowl chicken bites and pizza sale from noon to 4 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 7, at the post, 329 Main St.

One pound of boneless chicken bites with blue cheese and celery is $9. The bites are available in mild, hot, garlic parmesan, sweet chili, sizzlin’ honey garlic, butter, mild and hot garlic flavors. Extra blue cheese and celery are 75 cents and extra sauce is $1.

Pizza is $13 per unbaked tray and $14 baked. There is an extra $1 charge for onions and $1.50 each for extra cheese, pepperoni and mushrooms.

Porketta sandwiches are $4.

There also are two specials available: two trays of plain pizza for $25, and two orders of boneless bites and one tray of plain pizza for $30.

All orders must be pre-placed by calling Pete at 570-362-4170 or Nicole at 570-604-2452 by Friday, Feb. 5.

Delivery is available in Duryea and to surrounding towns.

Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 1227 will have a Super Bowl Sunday food sale from noon to 5 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 7, at the post, 492 Stephenson St.

One pound of boneless chicken bites with blue cheese and celery is $7. The bites are available in mild, commander’s signature, hot, Hoover hot, Carolina barbecue and barbecue flavors. Pizza is $12 per tray, $13 with pepperoni. A special offer which includes one pound of boneless bites and one tray of pizza is $19.

Collections schedule

Duryea Street Department collection schedule for the week of Jan. 31 is as follows: garbage, Monday, Feb. 1, and Tuesday, Feb. 2; plastic and glass recycling, Wednesday, Feb. 3; cardboard and paper recycling, Thursday, Feb. 4, and ashes, Friday, Feb. 5.

Holy Rosary open houseHoly Rosary School will host a virtual open house Sunday, Jan. 31, at holyrosaryduryea.org. The event will include virtual classroom tours and details about the school’s faith-based curriculum, activities and athletic programs. For information, please contact the school at 570-457-2553.

Sewer meeting

Duryea Borough Sewer Authority will have its monthly meeting at 6 p.m. Monday, Feb. 1, at the municipal building, 315 Main St. The public is invited to attend via Zoom by contacting the sewer authority office at 570-457-0122 by noon on the meeting date.

Germania breakfast

Germania Hose Company will host a drive-thru breakfast from 9 a.m. to noon Sunday, Feb. 21, at the hose company Menu includes sausage, ham, home fries, eggs, pancakes, rolls and dessert for $10. Purchase tickets at www.ghcbreakfast.company.site.

Offices closed

The Duryea Municipal Building is closed to the public. Until further notice, all transactions for borough business must be completed via the secure drop box at the entrance of the building. For information, call 570-655-2829.

Garbage stickers

Residents are reminded to purchase 2021 garbage placards. The deadline has been extended to Feb. 28. To purchase, please mail or place a check or money order in the lockbox at the municipal building made payable to Duryea Borough, 315 Main St., Duryea PA 18642. Include a self-addressed, stamped envelope to receive a placard and receipt. One bag per week is $100; two bags per week, $165; three bags, $205, and four bags, $245. Stickers for individual bags are $2.50 at the municipal building and $2.75 at Uni-Mart and Rehoski’s.

The 2021 placard must be displayed in the window to have garbage collected. The number of bags placed curbside must match the number on the placard. Extra bags will not be collected.

CEO food distribution

Duryea’s CEO food distribution takes place the second Monday of each month at Germania Hose Company, 430 Foote Ave. Set up is from 12:30 to 1:30 p.m. Food distribution is from 2 to 3 p.m. Volunteers are always welcome.

Regular recipients who have not picked up food in the last two months have been purged from the list and must reapply. To reapply, call Lois Hanczyc at 570-457-2482 and leave a message with your name and phone number. Recipients must complete an application before receiving food.

Brick Church closed

Brick United Methodist Church will not have services until further notice to slow the spread of COVID-19.
