As Christians enter Lent this week, many people will search for meatless food options each Friday during this 40-day period. To meet the needs of those individuals and families, the American Legion is baking fish, tossing pizzas and cooking up a full menu of your favorites on select Fridays during Lent.

Support the post home and enjoy a good home-cooked takeout meal at the post’s first Lenten meal of the season from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. Friday, Feb. 19, at the Duryea American Legion Brennan Regan Post 585, 329 Main St.

The menu includes the following items: baked haddock with lemon butter, choice of mashed potatoes or fresh-cut fries, vegetable, side salad and a roll, $10; Old Forge style pizza, full tray, $14, half tray, $7.50, toppings include onions for $1 extra, and olives, mushroom, extra cheese, sweet or hot peppers, $1.50 extra per topping; grilled cheese sandwich, $3, with tomato, $4; fresh cut fries, $3, with gravy or cheese, $4; onion rings, $4, and a kid’s meal of grilled cheese, fries and a snack, $4.

St. Mary’s Ash Wednesday service

St. Mary’s Polish National Catholic Church will have Ash Wednesday services Feb. 17 at the church, 200 Stephenson St. Services will include 8 a.m. Mass with the blessing and distribution of ashes and 7 p.m. service with Bitter Lamentations, ashes and benediction.

The church also will have devotions at 7 p.m. each Friday during Lent.

Nativity Lenten foods

Nativity of Our Lord Parish will have takeout only Lenten food sales from noon to 6 p.m. Fridays, Feb. 26 and March 12, at Sacred Heart of Jesus Hall, 529 Stephenson St. Food will be prepped and ready to heat at home.

The Feb. 26 sale will feature unbaked pizza for $14 per tray and clam chowder for $9 per quart. The March 12 sale is frozen pierogi and potato pancake batter. Pierogi are $8 per dozen, limit two. Potato pancake batter is $14 per quart. These are pre-order sales. Orders can be placed by calling the parish office at 570-457-3502. Order deadline for the Feb. 26 sale is Ash Wednesday, Feb. 17. Deadline for the March 12 is Wednesday, March 3.

Germania breakfast

Germania Hose Company will have a drive-thru breakfast from 9 a.m. to noon Sunday, Feb. 21, at the hose company, 430 Foote Ave. Menu includes sausage, ham, home fries, eggs, pancakes, rolls and dessert. Tickets are $10 at www.ghcbreakfast.company.site.

Offices closed

Duryea Municipal Building is currently closed to the public. Until further notice, all transactions for borough business must be completed via the locked and secured drop box at the entrance of the building. For information, please call 570-655-2829 during regular business hours at.

Garbage fee

Residents are reminded to purchase 2021 garbage placards. The deadline for new placards has been extended to Feb. 28. To purchase, please mail or place a check or money order in the lockbox at the municipal building made payable to Duryea Borough, 315 Main St., Duryea PA 18642. Residents should also include a self-addressed, stamped envelope with their payment to receive their placard and receipt. The prices are: one bag per week, $100; two bags per week, $165; three bags per week, $205, and four bags per week, $245. Stickers for individual bags are $2.50 at the municipal building and $2.75 at Uni-Mart and Rehoski’s.

Residents must have the 2021 placard displayed in their windows to have their garbage collected. The number of bags placed curbside for collection must match the placard in the window. Extra bags will not be collected.

Food distribution

Duryea’s CEO food distribution is on the second Monday of each month at Germania Hose Company, 430 Foote Ave., with set up from 12:30 to 1:30 p.m. and distribution from 2 to 3 p.m.

Any recipient who has not picked up food in the last two months has been purged from the list and must reapply. To reapply, please call Lois Hanczyc at 570-457-2482 and leave a message with your name and phone number. Recipients must complete an application before receiving the food.

Brick U.M. Church resumes services

Brick United Methodist Church, 935 Foote Ave., has resumed its weekly 9:45 a.m. Sunday service.
