Lent begins this week, and our American Legion auxiliary has the perfect complement to meet your meatless dining needs on Ash Wednesday. Duryea American Legion Auxiliary Unit 585 will host an Ash Wednesday hoagie sale from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. Feb. 22 at the Brennan Regan Post, 329 Main St.
Patrons may choose a 12-inch tuna, egg salad or veggie hoagie with a choice of American or provolone cheese and a choice of lettuce, tomato and onion toppings. The veggie hoagie also includes raw bell peppers, cucumbers, shredded carrots and black olives.
Each hoagie is $8.50. You can add extra cheese for $1, hot or sweet peppers for 50 cents or extra tuna, egg salad or veggies for $2.

SAL chicken bites sale
Sons of the American Legion Squadron 585 will host its boneless chicken bites sale from noon to 5 p.m., or until sold out, Sunday, Feb. 19, at the Brennan Regan Post, 329 Main St. The cost is $10 and includes one pound of boneless chicken bites along with blue cheese and celery. The bites are available in a variety of sauces: mild, hot, butter garlic, garlic parmesan, mild garlic, hot garlic, barbecue and the SALs secret sauce. Extra sauce is $1, and extra blue cheese is $2. Takeouts will be available.
Nativity newsNativity of Our Lord Parish will have the following Ash Wednesday services Feb. 22 at the church, 127 Stephenson St.: 7 and 9 a.m. and 7 p.m., Masses with imposition of ashes, and at noon and 4 p.m., liturgy of the word with imposition of ashes. There also will be a service at 1 p.m. at Crossin Towers.
Beginning Feb. 24, the parish will pray the Stations of the Cross in the church at 6:15 p.m. each Friday during Lent.

Nativity of Our Lord Parish’s pastoral council invites the community to join them for a Lenten service opportunity from 5 to 7 p.m. Wednesday, March 22, at the CEO/Weinberg Food Bank, 185 Research Dr., Pittston Twp. Participants will place food products into a senior food box on a conveyor-type system, then pass the box to the next volunteer. No heavy lifting is involved.

Ash Wednesday serviceBrick and Bethel United Methodist churches will have a joint Ash Wednesday service at 7 p.m. Feb. 22 at Bethel United Methodist Church, 532 Main St., Avoca.
Little League registration
Greater Pittston Area Little League registration is open at www.gplittleleague.com. Returning players can log in with the registration information they used last year, and new players can create an account.
The registration fees are: T-ball, $25; coach pitch, $50; minors, $85; majors, $85, and teeners, $125. An entire family can register for $125. GPA Little League baseball is open to children living in Duryea as well as any child attending Pittston Area’s primary, elementary or middle schools or Holy Rosary School.

VFW horseshoe tourneyDuryea Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 1227 will have its second annual Frozen Tundra Horseshoe Tournament from noon to 5 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 25, at the post, 592 Stephenson St. This is a double-elimination tournament. The entry fee is $20. Partners will be drawn on the day of the event. Register at the bar.
Tax payments
Residents may pay their Luzerne County/Duryea Borough tax bill at the Duryea Municipal Building, 315 Main St., from 10 a.m. to noon Mondays and from 4 to 6 p.m. Wednesdays. Residents may also mail their tax bill and payment to interim Tax Collector Therese Wrubel’s home, 129 Factory St., Avoca, PA 18641, or place it in the lockbox at her residence. Anyone choosing either of these options should include both parts of the tax bill and a self-addressed, stamped envelope to obtain a receipt.
