On Saturday, July 18, Holy Mother of Sorrows Young Men’s Society of Resurrection will hold its annual open pit chicken barbecue on the parish grounds. Nick Kaznietz, event chairman, explained for the safety of everyone, there will be no ticket sales and pickup will be drive by only. The event will be held from 1 to 4 p.m. or until sold out; first come, first served. More than 600 dinners are usually sold during the event. Cost per dinner is $12 and includes half a barbecue chicken, cole slaw, fries and dessert.
The 14th annual Dupont Softball Tournament will continue from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. Saturday, July 18, and 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. Sunday, July 19. There will be no fireworks or contests this year and there will be no concession stand. However, there will be food trucks at the field on both Saturday and Sunday. Saturday will be Tarnowski Bros. Kielbasi, serving pierogi, haluski, kielbasi and more. Sunday will be Snook’s Wings & Things, serving wings, hot dogs, hamburgers, cheesesteaks and more.
This fundraising event donates money to local charities. Last year, 12 local organizations received money from this tournament. The event also donates a $1,000 scholarship to a member of the Pittston Area graduating class. This will be the sixth year the Dupont Softball Tournament Scholarship is awarded.
