Mayor Dan Lello and Dupont Council proclaimed June 15-20 as Graduation Week in the borough and congratulate all of the town’s graduates.

Borough building access

Dupont Borough government will continue normal operations, and those seeking to do public business may telephone the borough building at 570-655-6216, ext. 101 or if needed, ring the doorbell for entrance into the offices. You may mail payments and correspondence to the borough building, 600 Chestnut St., Dupont, PA 18641 or drop them off at the lock box in the foyer of the building. The foyer will be open during regular business hours.

Trash and yard waste

Residents are reminded there is a weight limit of 30 pounds on trash bags and yard waste containers so the containers can be more easily lifted up into the trucks.

Electronics recycling and paper shedding will be held at the borough building from 3 to 6 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 6. Visit for updates.

Sewer bills

Deadline for the 2020 sewer bills has been extended to July 31. Only mail in payments will be accepted at this time, or until otherwise announced. No penalty will be charged as long as sewer bills are paid by July 31.

Tax notice

Susan Gregory, tax collector, announces the tax office in the borough building remains closed. Payments will be accepted by mail or you can deposit your payment in the drop box located in the foyer of the municipal building. Checks or money orders only; no cash payments will be accepted. Appointments can be made by calling Gregory at 570-6216, ext. 107 or 101 or her cell at 570-262-4100.

Luzerne County council adopted an ordinance that extends the deadline to pay county tax bills at face value from June 17 until Aug. 18.

Polish Club update

Although Luzerne County is going into the green phase of reopening, the Board of Directors of the Polish American Citizens Club has decided to remain closed for the time being to protect the health and safety of members and guests. The board of directors will evaluate the situation as it progresses and make decisions accordingly.

Chicken barbecue

Holy Mother of Sorrows will hold its annual open pit chicken barbecue with a few changes. For the safety of everyone, there will be no tickets sales and pickup will be drive-by only. The event will be held from 1 to 4 p.m., or until sold out, on Saturday, July 18, at the parish grounds. Cost per dinner is $12 and the menu includes half of a barbecue chicken, cole slaw, fries and dessert.

Lions food distribution

Dupont Lions Club’s monthly food distribution will be held at noon Thursday, June 25, at the Dupont Municipal Building. All qualifying residents of Dupont and Suscon are eligible. Residents are asked to remain in their vehicles and volunteers will bring the food to them.

Crime Watch meeting

The Dupont Crime Watch will meet at 7 p.m. Tuesday, June 30. It has not been decided if the meeting will be held in person or virtually. Details to follow next week.

Benefit softball tournament

The 14th annual Dupont Softball Tournament will be held Friday, July 17, through Sunday, July 19, at the field on Elm Street. This fundraising event donates funds to local charities. Last year, 12 local organizations received money from this tournament. The event also will provide a $1,000 scholarship that will be awarded to a member of the Pittston Area graduating class. This will be the sixth year the Dupont Softball Tournament Scholarship is awarded at Pittston Area.

Please be aware this event is contingent upon COVID-19 restrictions and bans being lifted in the area. Teams can contact Rob Lopata at 570-540-0772 or to register or for information.

Compost center

Greater Pittston Regional Compost Facility is open from 8 a.m. to noon Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday. Municipal members are: Avoca, Dupont, Duryea, Hughestown boroughs, Pittston City and Jenkins and Pittston townships. The facility is in the Grimes Industrial Park, 67 Garden Road, Dupont. Compost at this time is not available for pickup behind the Dupont Municipal Building.

Compost is available to residents of the member municipalities at no cost other than a fee of $10 to have employees load the compost. Contractor compost prices are $10 for a pickup, $25 for a 1-ton truck, $45 for a single axle and $75 for a tri-axle.

Yard waste accepted at the site includes grass, leaves and branches no wider than 6 inches. Stumps are not acceptable. Also, please do not mix in non-acceptable items, including trash, recycling, dirt, stone, etc. This will cause damage to the machinery.

Sacred Heart news

Congratulations to the Sacred Heart Confraternity of Christian Mothers raffle winners: first prize, $500, Mary Gruzenski; second prize, $250, Mr. and Mrs. Thomas Chisdock; third prize, $150, John Luckasavage, and fourth prize, $100, Nora Opiela.

Monthly picnic collection is for non-perishable food items for the buckets. Donations of sports items, liquor, instant lottery tickets and restaurant, supermarket and business gift cards are being accepted until the picnic.

Picnic will be held Thursday, July 30, to Sunday, Aug. 1.
