Several projects are scheduled for August in Dupont.

UGI will begin working on gas lines on Everhart, Lackawanna, Penn, Wyoming, Hillside and Hemlock streets. Motorists should be mindful of delays and detours. Also, the old Ben Franklin Kindergarten Center is scheduled for demolition this month. A water main project continues on Main Street and is estimated to take about two months.

Paving project

Dupont is submitting for funding to pave the following streets recently completed with gas line installations. In order to apply for funding, property surveys need to be completed by property owners within the proposed work area. These surveys will be mailed out to Gill, Hill and Highland street residents. Please complete and return at your earliest convenience to Dupont Borough, 600 Chestnut St., Dupont, PA 18641. Other areas include Bridge, Harding, Monroe, Liberty and Center streets. Any property owners planning to hook up for gas service within these areas should try and do so prior to the paving. Please contact Patty McDonald at 570-655-6216 with any questions.

Council meeting

Dupont Council will meet at 7 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 11, in the James Cocco Council Chambers. Residents can email concerns or questions to be addressed at the council meeting to under the subject Council Meeting.

Youth baseball season cancelled

Dupont Youth Baseball Organization announced that after much deliberation, it has decided the 2020 season will be canceled due to COVID-19 and safety concerns.

Dupont Youth Baseball Organization recently held its 14th annual softball tournament. Each year the group donates funds from the event to local organizations. This year’s recipients are: Autism Speaks, Greater Pittston YMCA, Wyoming Valley Challenger League, Dupont Hose Company, Dupont Veterans of Foreign Wars, Dupont Lions Club, Bayin’s Buddies, Dupont Police Department and the Dupont Youth Baseball Organization.

Holy Mother of Sorrows news

The Holy Mother of Sorrows Church annual flea market and dozynki/harvest festival is canceled due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Crime Watch news

Dupont Neighborhood Crime Watch invites everyone to visit the Dupont Neighborhood Crime Watch Facebook page. Everyone is invited to join the crime watch at any meetings or events. Dues are $1 per year. Meetings are held at 7 p.m. the last Tuesday of each month. Crime Watch officers are President Bob Price, Vice President Jesse Hindmarsh, Secretary Ellen Price and Treasurer Bill Lukasik

The next meeting is at 7 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 25, in the Dupont Municipal Building. All are welcome. Masks are required.

Lions Club food distribution

The Dupont Lions Club will hold its monthly food distribution at noon Thursday, Aug. 27, at Dupont Borough Building. All qualifying residents of Dupont and Suscon are eligible.

PACC scholarships

Polish American Citizens Club of Dupont is offering three $500 scholarships to students who meet the following requirements:

The student must be a direct descendant of an active club member. Students must be enrolled in their first year at a college or university for the 2020 year and have a GPA of not less than 3.0 with supporting documentation. The student must submit a typed essay on how he or she intends to contribute to society as a citizen of a free country. Applicants will be contacted by the board to review and discuss their essay. Essays and grades must arrive no later than Aug. 28. They should be mailed or delivered to members Jack Kuligowski, 30 Walnut St., Dupont, PA 18641 or John Kulick, 106 Dobson Road, Sweet Valley, PA 18656.

School taxes

Tax Collector Susan Gregory announced the school district taxes have been mailed. She will accept payments from behind the glass door of the borough secretary’s office. Masks are required. Once bills have been mailed, office hours will be from 4 to 6 p.m. Mondays and Wednesdays. No cash payments; only checks and money orders. For information, call 570-655-6216, ext. 107 or 101.

Compost information

Greater Pittston Regional Compost Facility is open from 8 a.m. to noon Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday. Municipal members are: Avoca, Dupont, Duryea, Hughestown, Jenkins Twp., Pittston City and Pittston Twp. The facility is located in the Grimes Industrial Park, 67 Garden Road, Dupont Compost is available to residents of the member municipalities at no cost other than a fee of $10 to have the employees load the compost. Contractor compost prices are $10 for a pickup, $25 for a 1-ton truck, $45 for a single axle and $75 for a tri axle.

Yard waste accepted at the site includes grass, leaves and branches no wider than 6 inches. Stumps are not acceptable at the site. Also, please do not mix non-acceptable items, trash, recycling, dirt, stone, etc. within the loads. This will cause damage to the machinery.

Farmers market

Avoca’s farmers market takes place from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. every Wednesday at its new location in the parking lot of Queen of Apostles Parish Hall, 742 Spring St. Avoca.
