As I drive around town, I have seen more and more Christmas lights dotting the landscaping, windows and trim of several homes and businesses. It adds to the festiveness of this season and will certainly make Santa feel welcome when he makes a stop in town on Friday.

Stop by and join in the fun at the Avoca Community Committee’s “Santa Sleigh” drive-thru Christmas event from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday, Dec. 17, at the Avoca Municipal Building, 952 Main St. This event will not only make your holiday spirit bright but will also provide you with a socially distant way to start your holiday celebrations.

Queen of the Apostles

Queen of the Apostles Parish is selling Paul’s famous meatballs and sauce. The quart-sized items include red sauce, $8; red sauce and meatballs, $10, and vodka sauce, $10. Please call Paul at 570-430-9015 or the parish office at 570-457-3412 to place your order.

The parish is selling Stocking Stuffer Pot of Gold tickets. Tickets, which are $10 each, offer a chance to win daily cash prizes each day in January. To purchase a ticket, please call the parish office. You also can mail requests for particular numbers along with the payment to Queen of the Apostles Parish, 715 Hawthorne St., Avoca, PA 18641. The daily winning number must match the state lottery’s evening Pick 3 number.

The Giving Tree is on display in the church vestibule. Anyone who takes a gift tag is asked to return gifts by Friday. Dec. 17, as they will be distributed Monday, Dec. 20.

Food pantry

Avoca Food Pantry will be open at 4 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 16, at Bethel United Methodist Church, 532 Main St. The public can pick up food, provided by the CEO Weinberg Northeast Regional Food Bank, in the rear entrance of the building. If you can volunteer to unload and distribute food, please arrive at the church at 1:30 p.m. For information, please call Jim at 570-921-9899.

Happy birthday to Jean Starzec, who will celebrate her 95th birthday Dec. 12.
