Pittston run planned

Pittston Memorial Library will hold its Book it Through Pittston 5K run/walk in honor of Tom and Dianne Tigue on Saturday, Sept. 8. To register, visit https://runsignup.com/Race/PA/Pittston/BookItThroughPittston5kForLiteracy or scrantonrunning.com.

A kickoff party will be held Thursday evening, Sept. 6, at the Red Mill.

Pittston Library’s summer hours are noon to 7 p.m. Monday and Thursday, 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Tuesday and Friday, 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday and closed Wednesday and Sunday.

The Pittston Library will return to fall hours beginning Saturday, Sept. 8. Hours will be noon to 7 p.m. Monday and Thursday, 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Tuesday, Friday and Saturday and closed Wednesdays. The library will be closed Labor Day, Monday, Sept. 3.

St. John Evangelical

Lutheran Church lists upcoming activities

St. John Evangelical Lutheran Church, Missouri Synod, 7 Wood St., Pittston, announces the following activities:

Council will meet after service Sunday, Sept. 9.

Planning meeting will be held after services Sunday Sept. 23.

Week day school will start Wednesday, Sept. 19 or Wednesday, Sept. 26. The time will be announced.

Outside of council meetings, all events are open to the public.

Gift cards are available for a variety of locations and in a variety of denominations. See Mary Ann Denman or Alan Drummond after services.

The church has a surplus of sanctuary candles available for $4 each. Contact the church and leave a message if interested in purchasing them.

Yatesville announces tax payment change

Due to the death of Yatesville Tax Collector Helen “Elaine” Centi, borough residents wishing to make payments in person must do so at the borough building, 33 Pittston Ave., from 9 a.m. to noon Monday through Thursday. For information, call 570-654-2455.

San Cataldo Society plans trip to NYC

The San Cataldo Society of Pittston is sponsoring its annual bus trip to the San Gennaro Festival in Little Italy, New York City, on Saturday, Sept. 22. Seats cost $40. For information, contact Grace Scarantino at 570-655-9377.

St. Joseph Marello

plans breakfast

An all-you-can eat breakfast will be held at St. Joseph Marello Parish, Pittston, from 8:30 to 11:30 a.m. Sunday, Sept. 9.

The menu will consist of home fries, scrambled eggs, pancakes, sausage and ham.

The cost is $8 for adults and $4 for children 6 to 10 years of age and free to children 5 and younger. Tickets will be available for purchase at the door on the day of the event.

St. Nicholas Byzantine

plans flea market

The Rev. Eduard Shestak and the parishioners of St. Nicholas Byzantine Catholic Church are having their annual flea market from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 15; 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 16, half price sale, and 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 22, bag and box sale. The event will be held rain or shine at the church hall, 320 Vine St., Old Forge.

Antiques, jewelry, household items, furniture, children’s items and more will be included. A variety of ethnic food items, baked goods, and refreshments also will be available.

St. Nicholas Altar and

Rosary selling piggies

St. Nicholas Altar and Rosary will have a takeout piggie sale at the church, 271 Tripp St., Swoyersville, on Saturday, Oct. 6. Pre-ordered piggies can be picked up from 2:30 to 3:30 p.m. in the church basement. Cost is $2.50 each. Call Marie at 570-287-3110 to place an order.

Pittston Library will hold

murder mystery fundraiser

Join the Pittston Memorial Library for its third annual murder mystery “Totally 80’s Totally Murder,” to be held at the Gramercy in Pittston at 6 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 20. Tickets are $60 per person and will include a hors’ d’oeuvres and cocktail hour, a three course served dinner, and the show. For reservations, call 570-654-9565.

Pittston trash bills due

Pittston City trash payment was due May 25. The new orange and white stickers must be used as of June 4.

Cost is $120 for 60 stickers. After the initial $120 fee is paid, residents may purchase extra stickers at a minimum of 12 for $24. Additional packs of 60 stickers are available for $120. A $20 late fee was added July 17. Bring or mail the bill when making payment. If mailing payment, include $5 for postage and handling, and make payable to Pittston City and mail to Tax Office, 35 Broad St., Pittston, PA 18640. Specify if the stickers are to be sent to an address other than the mailing address.

Pittston residents who do not receive a trash bill are responsible to notify the treasurer’s office at 570-654-1090. Landlords are reminded bills are sent to the homeowner. If a tenant is responsible for payment, landlords must give the bill to the tenant so they can bring or mail the bill when payment is made.
