plans third annual

wiffle ball tourney

Little Eric’s Foundation’s third annual Wiffle Ball Classic will be held Sunday, June 3, at West Pittston Little League, 535 6th St. West Pittston. Sign-ins begin at 8 a.m. and play starts promptly at 9.

The tournament is double elimination format. Age brackets are: 7-9 years, 10-12 years, 13-15 years and 16-adult. Bats and balls will be provided. No tournament bats allowed.

Registration fee is $50 per team of five players. To register, send check payable to LEF with team name, age bracket, contact person and phone number to Jessica Speicher 508 Luzerne Ave., West Pittston, PA 18643 Deadline to register is May 20.

The tournament also will feature basket raffles, food and refreshments. No outside food or beverages allowed. If interested in donating a basket, call Jenn at 570-510-2242.

Mass time changes set

at St. Joseph Marello,

St. John the Evangelist

St. John the Evangelist and St. Joseph Marello have announced a change in Mass times as of Sunday, May 20.

Weekend Masses at St. John the Evangelist will be held at 4:30 p.m. Saturday and 9 a.m. and 11:30 a.m. Sunday.

Masses at St. Joseph Marello will be at 4 p.m. Saturday and 8 a.m. and 10:30 a.m. Sunday.

Mt. Zion Methodist Church plans barbecue

Mt. Zion Methodist Church, Mt. Zion Road, Harding, will host its 29th annual chicken barbecue Saturday, May 19. Dinners include half a chicken, a baked potato, corn on the cob, pepper slaw, dinner roll, dessert and beverage. Takeouts start at 4 p.m. and dining room will start serving at 4:30. St. Joseph Senior

Social Club will meet

St. Joseph’s Senior Social Club will meet at 1 p.m. Thursday, May 17, at St. Joseph Marello Center on William Street, Pittston.

This month’s meeting will be the annual covered dish. Each member is asked to bring a dish of their choice. Bingo and card games will follow the meal.

The June meeting will be the annual ice cream social. Servers will be Lena Seman, Mickey Musto, Charles Valenti, Shirley Valenti and Edith Kepics. Afterward there will be bingo and card games.

The organization collects items for the food pantry at St. John the Evangelist Church. Members are asked to remember to bring staples and non-perishables to the meeting. John Reedy, chairperson, delivers these boxes to St. John’s.

New members are always welcome. Residency in Pittston is not required to be a member. Meetings are held the third Thursday of each month.

St. Michael’s Byzantine Catholic Church, 205 N. Main St., Pittston, is having a stuffed cabbage roll (piggie) and halushki sale. Pickup will be from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Friday, May 18, and Saturday, May 19. Cost is $2.25 each or six for $13. Halushki is $6 per quart. Call Linda at 570-905-7387 to place an order.

1960, plans reunion

Pittston High School, Class of 1960, will hold a reunion from noon to 6 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 18, at Jenkins Fire Company. Invitations will be sent later.

Pittston City 2018-19

trash bills mailed

Pittston City mailed 2018-19 trash bills April 27. Payment is due May 25. The blue and white stickers can be used through May 31. New orange and white stickers must be used as of June 4. Bring or mail the bill when making payment.

Cost is $120 for 60 stickers. After the initial $120 fee is paid, residents may purchase extra stickers at a minimum of 12 for $24. Additional packs of 60 stickers also are available for $120. A $20 late fee will be added after July 16.

If mailing payment, include $5 postage and handling payable to Pittston City and mailed to Tax Office, 35 Broad St., Pittston, PA 18640. Specify if the stickers are to be sent to an address other than the mailing address. Otherwise, they will be sent to the name and address on the check.

Pittston City residents who do not receive a trash bill in the mail are responsible to notify the treasurer’s office at 570-654-1090. Landlords are reminded bills are sent to the homeowner. If a tenant is responsible for the payment, landlords must give the bill to their tenant so they can bring or mail the bill when payment is made.

Pittston H.S., Class

of 1959, will meet

Pittston High School, Class of 1959, will hold an initial planning meeting at 7 p.m. Tuesday, May 15, at Tony’s Pizza in Port Griffith. All classmates are invited to attend and help with preparations for next year’s 60th class reunion.

U.M. Church of Pittston sets theater trips

United Methodist Church of Pittston will sponsor the following bus trips in 2018:

Wednesday, July 25, Hunterdon Dinner Theater, New Jersey, to see “Nunsense,” starring Joyce DeWitt from the television sitcom “Three’s Company.” Cost is $100, all inclusive. To make a reservation or for information, call Cathy at 570-603-1915.

St. John Evangelical Lutheran Church, Missouri Synod, 7 Wood St., Pittston, announces the following activities:

Council will meet after service Sunday, May 13.

Congregational meeting will be held Sunday, May 20, during the service. Planning will meet after service May 20.

Jan Lokuta will lead a church tour at St. John’s on May 20.

Shipped Wrecked, the church’s Vacation Bible School, will be held July 9-13.

Outside of council meetings, events are open to the public.

Musicians needed for patriotic concert

Pennsylvania Northeast Chapter of the American Guild of Organists is planning a concert of patriotic music at 7 p.m. Monday, July 2, at St. John the Evangelist Church, Pittston. The concert will include music for organ, brass and percussion.

Chapter members are hoping to form a combined choir with representatives from several religious denominations singing the national anthem, a few patriotic hymns, and one patriotic choral work that can be easily learned and sung as part of the concert. The choir will be under the direction of Raphael Micca, chapter dean and newly appointed music director at St. Joseph Marello Parish, and accompanied by organist Michael Sowa, music director at Our Lady of the Eucharist Parish.

Anyone who loves to sing is invited to take part in this musical celebration of the nation’s independence.

Rehearsals will be held at St. John’s at 7 p.m. Mondays, June 18 and June 25. Anyone interested in participating should email Mike Sowa at or call him at 570-881-2301 by Monday, June 4.

Enjoyment Club plans

golf tournament

Italian American Enjoyment Club will hold its second annual Golf Classic on Saturday, June 2, at Pine Hills Country Club, Taylor. Shotgun start is at 8 a.m. Format is captain and crew.

Cost is $85 per golfer or $340 per four-player team. Fee includes tournament play, dinner at the Italian Club hall after the tournament, golf polo shirt, hole contests with prizes, team awards, birdie pool and raffles. Registration deadline is Saturday, May 19. Proceeds benefit improvements to the club. Only the first 112 paid entries will be accepted. Last year’s event sold out.
