Catholic, Class of ’55,

schedules meeting

Pittston Central Catholic High School, Class of 1955, will hold its monthly meeting at Valenti’s, Exeter, on Tuesday, Oct. 10. The dinner meeting will begin at 5:30 p.m.

The class is making plans for its annual Christmas in November celebration to be held at Fox Hill Country Club.

All classmates are invited.

Pittston Library plans

Scarecrow Festival

Pittston Library will host a Scarecrow Festival from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 14. Admission is free.

Participants will judge scarecrows that have been created by area residents. There also will be a pie baking contest. To submit a scarecrow or a pie, call 570-654-9565 to register.

The event will be held rain or shine and will include goodie bags for the first 100 children, free balloons from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., free face painting, scarecrow craft session, bake sale and refreshments. There also will be a wooden sign-making class for $10 per person.

NEPA Intergenerational

Coalition conference set

Officials of the NEPA Intergenerational Coalition, an arm of the Pittston Memorial Library, announced the 11th annual Grandparents Raising Grandchildren (GRG) Conference will be held from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Friday, Oct. 20, at Genetti’s Hotel and Conference Center, Wilkes-Barre. The theme is “Parenting Your Grandchildren.” All grandparents or relative caregivers raising grandchildren are free and professional social service personnel are $35 each.

Keynote speaker will be therapist Cindy Loftus-Vergari. She will be followed by a panel of five specialists who will offer opportunities for attendees to learn about their capabilities to assist caregivers of youngsters. State Rep. Eddie Day Pashinski will also speak about proposed legislation dealing with GRG. A hot lunch will be provided. The afternoon session will include four attorneys at a legal panel to provide information regarding custody and adoption as well as answer questions. There also will be vendor tables available with information regarding services that are important to this demographic.

Coalition Chairman Howard J. Grossman will provide welcoming remarks.

The coalition meets monthly at the library. Anyone interested in participating can call 570-262-3443 or email or contact the coalition office at the library, 47 Broad St., Pittston. There are three active support groups offered, one sponsored by Catholic Social Services in Wilkes-Barre, which meets in the evening and one at the Pittston Memorial Library, which meets at noon on the fourth Monday of the month. A support group also exists at Loftus-Vergari Associates, Wilkes-Barre.
