Wyoming Free Library is hosting a special 90th anniversary event from 11 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 8. The community event is open to the public and light refreshments will be served.  

A list of activities includes, a special “90 Years of Books” tea party, dedications and proclamations from state Rep. Aaron Kaufer, state Sen. John Yudichak and Gov. Tom Wolf and a special dedication from the Wyoming Area Catholic Builder’s Club.

Historian Clark Switzer will hold a presentation from 1:30 to 2:30 p.m. Space is limited and registration is required.

The library is raffling off a video game basket. The basket includes a Nintendo Switch, two $25 GameStop gift cards, a Legend of Zelda poster and a Space Invaders diary. Cost is $5. The drawing ends at 2 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 7.

The library will host a discussion of “The Handmaid’s Tale” by Margaret Atwood at noon Saturday, Aug. 26. Please contact the library to register.

The library’s monthly themed tea parties are continuing. The program is free to all children ages 3 and up. Space is limited, so please call the library to register. Upcoming teas include: 90th anniversary tea party, “90 Years of Books,” 11 a.m. to noon Tuesday, Aug. 8, and All About the Library, 1 to 2 p.m. Friday, Aug. 25.

1st Lt. Jeffrey DePrimo Golf Tournament

The 1st Lt. Jeffrey DePrimo Memorial Fund of the Luzerne Foundation will host the ninth annual 1st Lt. Jeffrey DePrimo Golf Tournament on Saturday, Aug. 12, at the Wilkes-Barre Golf Club. Registration is at 7 a.m. with a captain and crew format. Tee off is at 8 a.m.

Cost is $75 per golfer, which includes riding cart and 18 holes of golf, followed by dinner and awards. Early registration is encouraged to ensure proper shirt size. Registration can be done at

Wyoming/West Wyoming Senior Citizens

Wyoming/West Wyoming Senior Citizens met recently for their annual picnic.

Chairpersons were Vickie Mecklavage, Donna Pocceschi, Marion Mantione and Nancy Marcy. The 50/50 winners were Ann Kosloski, Irene Zelinski, George Yurek, Carol DeSalvo, Del McDermot and Frank Perfinski. Carol  DeSalvo took the bingo jackpot.

Exeter Civil Service Board

Exeter Borough is accepting letters of interest from Exeter Borough residents who would like to serve on the Exeter Borough Police Civil Service Board. Letters can be sent to Exeter Borough, 1101 Wyoming Ave., Exeter, PA 18643.

Exeter recycling

Exeter Borough is now using single stream recycling. Pick up will still be Mondays. All recyclable items can now be placed in the same container and can be placed out weekly.

A flyer is in the white rural mailbox in front of the borough building with a list of what can and cannot be put out. Everything on the calendar is still recyclable with the exception of shredded paper. The borough will no longer be picking up shredded paper. Also, there are additional recyclable items on the new list that were not included before.

Yard waste will still be on Thursdays. Regular garbage is still Wednesdays.

Please do not use the yellow recycling bins for garbage. Place your bags in regular garbage cans. There is a three-bag limit.

Wyoming Area Catholic news

Wyoming Area Catholic announced its Cougar Cash summer schedule. Gift cards/certificates for the following local stores will be sold on a first come, first served basis from 9 to 11 a.m. Wednesdays.

Local merchants include: Gerrity’s, Weis/Mr. Z’s, Price Chopper, Cinnabon, Redner’s, Wegman’s, Cold Case Beverage, McDonald’s, Grotto Pizza, Superior Plus, Schiel’s, Bo Brothers, Sabatini’s, Sapphire Salon, Quinn’s, Pizza Perfect, Perkins and Crest Cleaners. Orders for other merchants available through the Cougar Cash program will be taken Wednesday morning and will be available to pick up the following Wednesday morning.

The schedule will run the following dates: Aug. 9, all merchants; Aug. 16, local merchants only; Aug. 23, no Cougar Cash orders; Aug. 28, first day of school, regular Cougar Cash orders will begin.

The Wyoming Area Catholic School office will be open during the summer from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. These hours will be in effect through Aug. 11. Beginning Monday, Aug. 14, office hours will be from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. until the first day of school, Monday, Aug. 28.

The uniform exchange tables will be set up for parents to look for uniforms their children need through Friday, Aug. 18. The exchange program will be held during summer office hours from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.

  West Wyoming yard waste

West Wyoming will collect yard waste Thursday, Aug. 10, from residents living in the Atherton Park section, up to but not including Eighth Street. Residences on Eighth Street up to the Exeter line will have their scheduled collection Thursday, Aug. 17. Thereafter, yard waste will be picked up on alternating Thursdays.

Residents are reminded to place yard waste out the night before the collection in open containers and to bundle and tie any bushes, hedges or small trees in 3-foot lengths. Yard waste containers should not exceed 30 pounds. No plastic, stones or dirt allowed.

West Wyoming recycling

West Wyoming Borough is now using single stream recycling, so cans, paper, plastic, and cardboard can be commingled together and deposited in any of the recycling containers located behind the fire department.

Glass recycling needs to be separated and deposited in the designated glass recycling container.

Please do not throw garbage in the recycling containers.
