During his farewell speech to the cadets of the U.S. Military Academy on May 12, 1962, U.S. Army General Douglas MacArthur imparted his wisdom on what a soldier should be with three simple words and one simple phrase, “Duty, Honor, Country. Those three hallowed words reverently dictate what you ought to be, what you can be, what you will be.”

The members of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Auxiliary in town appreciate those words and apply them to their plans as they develop ways to help our veterans. They have a meeting this week to finalize details for a local veterans event. Read on to see how you can help and instill duty, honor and country in your life.

Avoca VFW Auxiliary Post 8335 will meet at 7 p.m. Monday, Oct. 7, at the post home, 915 Main St.

President June Fitzgerald will preside over the meeting. Plans for the veterans bingo event will be finalized at this time.

The veterans bingo event will take place at 6 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 16, at the Department of Veterans Affairs Medical Center, Plains Twp. Members will leave the post home at 5 p.m., where transportation will be provided to the center.

New members are welcome to attend the meeting. For information or an application, please call 570-457-9604.
