Ok, all of you right-brain dominated thinkers, get your creativity flowing and prepare for your chance to become a part of Avoca’s history.
The Avoca Borough 150th Anniversary Planning Committee will sponsor an art contest where participants will compete to design the borough’s official sesquicentennial logo. There will be two divisions in the contest: adults, 18 and older; children, 7 to 17.
The contest winners will have their hand-drawn logo become a part of the borough’s history as it will not only be utilized for the sesquicentennial but also for years to come.
Contest applications and details are available from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., Monday through Friday at the Avoca Municipal Building, 752 Main St., or by emailing Avoca2021@gmail.com.
Applications and logo designs are due by Friday, Nov. 1.
Tax and trash payments
Avoca Tax Collector Therese Wrubel announced the Pittston Area school taxes have been distributed.
Residents can pay their bill from 5 to 6 p.m. Mondays and 9:30 to 11:30 a.m. and 1:30 to 3:30 p.m. Tuesdays and Thursdays in the Avoca Municipal Building, 950 Main St., during the rebate period only. Residents also can pay their bill via mail by sending the entire bill and payment to Therese Wrubel, 129 Factory St., Avoca, PA 18641. Please include a self-addressed, stamped envelope if you need a receipt.
Anyone who did not receive a bill should call Wrubel at 570-457-4891.
Residents also are reminded they may only place three bags of garbage curbside for the weekly refuse collection. Additional bags require a sticker which is $3 and can be purchased from Wrubel anytime by calling 570-457-4891.
The Knights of Columbus Council 5940 will lead a rosary crusade and rally at noon Saturday, Oct. 12, at the Healey Memorial Playground, 398 Foote Ave., Duryea. This rally is one of 20,000 others taking place at the exact same time throughout the country as part of the “America Needs Fatima” movement.
Little League meetings
Avoca/Dupont Little League will have its monthly meeting at 6 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 13, at the Avoca Borough Municipal Building, 952 Main St.
The league officers for the 2019-20 season will be elected at this meeting. Following the election, there will be a discussion about the fall season, the continuing merger with the Greater Pittston Area Little League and regular league business. The public is invited to attend.
Greater Pittston Area Little League, consisting of Avoca/Dupont, Duryea and Pittston City, will have a general meeting at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 17, at the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 1227, 492 Stephenson St., Duryea.
The upcoming merger of the three leagues will be discussed at this time. All officers from each league are required to attend. The meeting is open to the public and anyone interested in volunteering in any capacity.
Avoca Food Pantry will be open at 4 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 17, at the Bethel United Methodist Church, 532 Main St. Food can be picked up in the rear entry of the building.
Volunteers are needed to unload and distribute food at 1:30 p.m.
Avoca Community Committee will host an Oktoberfest bar hop throughout Avoca starting at 3 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 19. The participating bars include Litzy’s Lounge, Ernie G.’s, Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 8335, Boozer’s Sports Bar, McAlpine St. Pub and Pizza and the West Side Social Club.
The cost is $25 per person, which includes a custom T-shirt, transportation around town, drink specials, giveaways and entertainment.

Queen of the Apostles news
Queen of the Apostles Parish’s worship committee will meet at 6 p.m., Monday, Oct. 21, in the rectory, 715 Hawthorne St.
The Avoca Farmers Market is open from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Wednesdays in the parking area of 824 McAlpine St.
Alcoholics Anonymous meets at 7:30 p.m. Tuesdays and Thursdays in the basement of the Queen of the Apostles rectory, 715 Hawthorne St. Use the sunroom entrance.
Happy birthday to Julie Murphy, who will celebrate her special day Oct. 16.
