Avoca Ancient Order of Hibernians will host its annual Thomas P. Durkin Memorial Avoca Open on Saturday, Aug. 31, at Pine Hills Country Club, 140 S. Keyser Ave., Taylor. The format is captain and mate with a shotgun start at 8 a.m.

The cost is $90 per golfer which includes green fees, use of a cart, cash prizes and a post-tournament luncheon at the West Side Social Club, 711 Main St.

Anyone who wants to register for this day of fun on the links with local golf enthusiasts may contact Jim at 570-417-8563 or Gene at 570-313-3079. Registration is available at the West Side Social Club any Thursday evening.

All proceeds will benefit scholarships for local high school students and other community projects.

Bible camp

Nativity of Our Lord Parish, in partnership with Queen of the Apostles Parish, Avoca, and Sacred Heart of Jesus Parish, Dupont, will host vacation Bible camp from 9:30 a.m. to noon Monday, Aug. 6, through Friday, Aug. 10, at Nativity of Our Lord Parish, 127 Stephenson St.

Registration is open to all children, from 4 years old to grade six. Youth and adult volunteers are welcome to help.

On the final day of camp, campers’ families are invited for a review of the week’s activities and a picnic lunch.

The camp is free, but donations will be accepted to defray the cost of the program.

Food pantry

Avoca Food Pantry will be open at 4 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 15, at Bethel United Methodist Church, 532 Main St. Food can be picked up in the rear entry of the building.

Volunteers are needed to unload and distribute food at 1:30 p.m.

VFW Auxiliary meeting

Avoca Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 8335 Auxiliary will meet at 7 p.m. Monday, Aug. 5, at the post home, 915 Main St. President June Fitzgerald will preside over the meeting. Paula Regan and June Fitzgerald will be the hostesses.

Officers installed for 2019-20 are expected to attend this meeting.

DePrimo golf tournament

The 11th annual 1st. Lt. Jeffrey DePrimo Memorial Golf Tournament will take place Saturday, Aug. 10, at Sand Springs Golf Course, Drums.

Registration begins at 7 a.m. with a captain and crew tee-off at 8 a.m. Cost is $75 per golfer, which includes green fees, use of a cart, dinner and awards. Registration is available at

All proceeds will benefit the 1st Lt. Jeffrey DePrimo Memorial Fund of the Luzerne Foundation.

‘Battle of the Tracks’

The Avoca Community Committee will host the “Battle of the Tracks: Avoca vs. West Avoca” tournament Friday, Aug. 16, through Saturday, Aug. 17, at the Avoca/Dupont Little League grounds and West Avoca Park, Mill Street.

This tournament includes friendly competitions between adults who lived or currently live in Avoca or West Avoca. The fun kicks off with kickball at 6 p.m. Friday, Aug. 16; cornhole at 10 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 17, followed by a free throw shootout.

Registration, which is open to people 18 and older, is $5 per person and includes participation in each competition. If you do not have a team, you can be placed on one. In addition, there also will be a hot dog eating contest.

Food and drinks will be on sale at the Avoca Dupont Little League stand throughout the tournament. All proceeds from the food sales will benefit the Little League.

Queen of the Apostles

Queen of the Apostles Parish will have its annual family picnic Sunday, Aug. 18, at Mercatili-Seglia Park, 4046 Birney Ave., Moosic. Mass will be celebrated at 2 p.m. followed by a delicious covered dish meal, games and lots of family fun.

Farmers market

The Avoca Farmers Market is open from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Wednesdays in the parking area of 824 McAlpine St.

Yard waste collections

Avoca Borough collects yard waste every Tuesday. A maximum of three standard-sized garbage cans, filled with yard waste not to exceed 30 pounds, will be allowed per collection.

Residents can place the following separated items in the containers: grass clippings and leaves, shrubs, hedge clippings and tree limbs which should not exceed 3 feet in length and half inch in diameter.

Rocks, stones, dirt and animal waste are not acceptable forms of yard waste.

Also, please do not place yard waste in 55-gallon drums, large wheeled garbage cans, large plastic storage totes or plastic bags. Items in these containers will not be collected.

Collection containers should be placed curbside by 7 a.m. on collection days.

Alcoholics Anonymous

Alcoholics Anonymous meets at 7:30 p.m. Tuesdays and Thursdays in the basement of the Queen of the Apostles rectory, 715 Hawthorne St. Use the sunroom entrance.
