Start the holiday season right by celebrating the true reason for this blessed Christmas season by attending Queen of the Apostles Parish’s annual Polish Advent Mass.

The Mass will be held at noon Tuesday, Dec. 3, at the church, 715 Hawthorne St. The Mass will be celebrated in Polish by the Rev. Stephen Krawontka.

Following the Mass, there will be a light luncheon served in the parish hall, 742 Spring St., featuring chicken soup, bread and butter, dessert and beverages.

All are welcome!

Food pantry

Avoca Food Pantry will be open at 4 p.m. Thursdays, Dec. 5 and 19, at the Bethel United Methodist Church, 532 Main St. Food can be picked up in the rear entry of the building. Volunteers are needed to unload and distribute food at 1:30 p.m.

VFW Auxiliary party

Veterans of Foreign Wars Auxiliary Post 8335 has changed the date of its Christmas party. It will take place at 5 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 8, at the post home, 915 Main St., instead of Dec. 7. Gifts will be exchanged. This is a members’ only event.

Queen of the Apostles news

Queen of the Apostles Parish Women’s Guild will have its annual Christmas party at 2 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 8, in Queen of the Apostles Parish Hall, 742 Spring St. Tickets are $25 and can be purchased by calling Debbie Callahan at 570-457-8887 or Jane Maxwell at 570-335-8678.

The menu includes red and white pizza and stromboli appetizers, garden salad, mashed potatoes and gravy, California mixed vegetables, penne pasta with vodka cream sauce, chicken scampi, breaded chicken tenders, roast beef au jus and rolls and butter served buffet style, plus cake for dessert and coffee, tea and soda.

Queen of the Apostles Parish will host Advent rosary devotions followed by benediction at 5 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 8, at the church, 715 Hawthorne St. The Rev. Phillip Sladicka, pastor, will lead the prayers, and Joan Saia Tallo, organist with the parish choir, will provide music for the event. This is an opportunity for the public to honor the Blessed Mother on her feast of the Immaculate Conception.

Tax payment reminder

Tax Collector Therese Wrubel announces the tax office will be closed Tuesday, Dec. 10. Residents are reminded the third installment is due by Thursday, Dec. 12, and the face amount on the school tax is due Wednesday, Dec. 18.

The Luzene County/Avoca Borough taxes are in penalty phase. Final payment is due Monday, Dec. 30.

Residents are asked to send separate checks if they are submitting payments for the school and county/borough taxes in one envelope.

Alcoholics Anonymous

Alcoholics Anonymous meets at 7:30 p.m. Tuesdays and Thursdays in the basement of the Queen of the Apostles rectory, 715 Hawthorne St. U

Please use the sunroom entrance.
