Now that the Chirstmas season has ended, it’s time to put away your Chirstmas decorations — if you haven’t already. To help make it a bit easier, Avoca Borough will offer a Christmas tree collection this week.
Christmas trees will be collected Tuesday, Jan. 14. Residents should place their tree curbside no later than Monday, Jan. 13. All decorations must be removed. Artificial trees will not be collected.
Avoca Food Pantry will be open at 4 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 16, at Bethel United Methodist Church, 532 Main St. Food can be picked up in the rear entry of the building. Volunteers are needed to unload and distribute food at 1:30 p.m.
Queen of the Apostles news
Queen of the Apostles Parish will celebrate A Day of Prayer for the Legal Protection of Unborn Children on Tuesday, Jan. 21, at the church, 715 Hawthorne St. This day, which will commemorate the 47th anniversary of the Supreme Court ruling legalizing abortion, will begin with Mass at 8 a.m. followed by the Divine Mercy Chaplet. After the chaplet, the parish will have its regularly scheduled Eucharistic Day of Adoration until 8 p.m. A special Eucharistic Holy Hour for Life will begin at 6:40 p.m. with a music meditation, the recitation of the rosary for life, a special pro-life program and benediction.
Anyone who wants to have their home blessed for the new year may call the parish office at 570-457-3412 to schedule a convenient time for the Rev. Phil Sladicka to stop by.
The parish announces the following meetings in the rectory: pastoral council, 6 p.m. Monday, Jan. 13; women’s guild, 7 p.m.,Tuesday, Jan. 14; worship committee, 6 p.m. Monday, Jan. 20; buildings and grounds committee, 6:30 p.m. Monday, Jan. 27, and finance council, 6:30 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 28.
Refuse invoices for 2020 will be mailed to residents soon.
The fee to have up to three bags collected weekly has not increased this year. It is as follows: $160 if purchased by Feb. 20; $165 if purchased between Feb. 21 and March 20; $175 if purchased between March 21 and April 20; $185 if purchased between April 21 and May 20, and $195 if purchased between May 21 and June 21. After June 21, all unpaid bills will be turned over to a magistrate.
Residents can pay their bill 5 to 6 p.m. Mondays, Jan. 20 and 27, and 9:30 to 11:30 a.m. Tuesdays, Jan. 21 and 28, in the Avoca Municipal Building, 950 Main St.
Residents also can pay the fee via mail by sending a check made payable to Avoca Borough, c/o Therese Wrubel, 129 Factory St., Avoca, PA 18641.
Beginning in early February, Wrubel will increase her office hours from 9:30 to 11:30 a.m. and 1:30 to 3:30 p.m. Tuesdays and Thursdays and from 5 to 6 p.m. Mondays.
Avoca Ancient Order of the Hibernians will meet at 7 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 30, at the West Side Club, 711 McAlpine St.
All members are asked to attend.
Avoca Borough encourages residents to mark the following dates on their calendars: Wednesday, July 15, white goods collection, and Monday, Sept. 21, bulk item/furniture pick up.
If you need to dispose of a white goods item before or after the pickup date, please call 570-451-0625 or 570-457-4947.
If you need to dispose of a bulk item that is not normally collected with weekly garbage, please call J.P. Mascaro at 1-800-243-7575. Couches, chairs, tables, etc. that are left curbside will not be collected unless arrangements are made with Mascaro.
Matresses must be wrapped in plastic for collection.
VFW Auxiliary meeting
Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 8335 Auxiliary will not meet in January. The next meeting is at 7 p.m. Monday, Feb. 3, at the post home, 915 Main St. President June Fitzgerald will preside. Refreshments will be served after the meeting.
Alcoholics Anonymous meets at 7:30 p.m. Tuesdays and Thursdays in the basement of the Queen of the Apostles Parish rectory, 715 Hawthorne St. Use the sunroom entrance.
Happy birthday to Bill Brandt, who will celebrate his special day on Thursday, Jan. 16.
