When the state-of-the-art space formerly occupied by Junior Achievement and Biztown became available, the Greater Wyoming Valley YMCA saw an opportunity to serve more families in the Pittston area.
“There’s really been a need for child care,” said Brianna Dugas.
Dugas will serve as the childcare director at the Mericle Family Center, slated to open in the Oak Street, Pittston Twp., facility by mid-September. She said the local YMCA organization has wanted to provide more affordable childcare options, and the Oak Street facility will be perfect thanks to its proximity to the industrial park in the area.
“The center will really help families in that region,” she said.
The center is able to provide care to 160 children in 16 classrooms and in the large indoor and outdoor play areas offered by the facility, Dugas said. They will be open from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday through Friday, to offer daily care and before and after school care.
Dugas said the YMCA has wanted to expand childcare opportunities for a while.
“We’ve certainly been looking to expand for some time,” she said.
When the building became available, Dugas said they jumped at the opportunity to expand into a new, clean space.
“The space is quite unique,” she said. “It’s set up like a small city and it’s all state-of-the-art.”
Registration is open now, and Dugas said she hopes to host an open house next month. In the meantime, construction is underway on new playgrounds and classrooms.
Dugas said the center’s programming will emphasize “the whole child.”
“We put a heavy emphasis on building healthy habits from a young age,” she said.
The center is offering pre-enrollment discounts as well. For information on registration, parents can contact Dugas directly. Call 570-931-3795 or visit wvymca.org/childcare/ for information.
“We have registrants for every single age group so far,” she said. “But nobody is waitlisted yet.”
