Jesus tells us if we want to find ourselves, we must lose ourselves.

And if we want to be first, we must be willing to be last.

We humans pretty much think this is impossible.

So does God. After all, he created us.

So he gave us the secret to accomplish these two tasks.

He gave us fatherhood.

By losing myself in my kids I have found myself in ways I never dreamed possible.

And in putting them first and me last, I discovered a whole new definition of what it means to be first.

It’s been 39 years since my first child was born, 35 since the second, and the rewards of completely losing myself in them and putting their interests ahead of mine continue to this day.

Thanks, God. You really know what you’re doing, don’t you?
